Pros

  • I prefer the DJ without the fluted bezel.
  • I’ve always liked 1970-90s Datejusts but was never able to justify purchasing one. ... Now that I’m about 80% recovered I got this 1990 tritium Datejust to celebrate!
  • This is why I made my white dial exactly this configuration. I didn’t want the fluted bezel to take away from the jubilee and scream “I’m [kind of] a day date/president!” It’s my go to “dress watch” and love it.
  • I have the exact same thing in the mint green dial. It's absolutely fantastic
  • Parent context: [Rolex Datejust] It wears so well on the Jubilee. Reply: Got this exact configuration for my father in law for his 60th. It’s so versatile.

Cons

  • A fluted DJ would be nice but why get it in white when there are so many *stunning* color options?
  • While Rolex Datejust flexes its gold galore, SpongeBob’s jellyfish dance leaves them floored!
  • Conversely, the guy whose entire collection is 6 Datejusts. My face when I see these kinds of collections…
  • I tried on the Datejust, Yacht Master, and Submariner. Very well made, but I never felt they were worth the hype, price, or wait.
  • I have owned a DJ in the past (I know that’s not what you’re considering)

DJ on jubilee + smooth bezel is so clean and versatile. Not too much in your face, love it

That black sunburst against the silver case is so clean, it picks up light in a way that feels understated but still catches your eye. I've been on the fence about the AR coating thing for years, part of me likes the glare in certain light, it's almost like a built-in reminder that there's a crystal there, but then you step inside and wish it was invisible. The 36mm size is spot on, anything bigger and it starts feeling like you're wearing a clock instead of a watch.

this is IMO close to the ideal watch. The 36mm Oyster case wears fantastic – there's good reason a case like that has been in production all the way since the Datejusts introduction in 1945. The proportions on the case/lugs, also with the black sunburst dial with a relatively minimalistic minute track / baton indices setup, just works.

The watch has huge sentimental value for me since it feels to represent my father's tenacity and personality. This was a watch he wore daily regardless of the occasion. Work, sleep, carpentry, cutting firewood, hunting, quite literally never took it off.

My 2 most important watches are the citizen eco drive my dad gave me the day I graduated high school and the Rolex date just that he gave me the Christmas after we got the diagnosis that he had stage 4 cancer. ... those matter because of where they came from, not the money spent on them.
