Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Apple Watch is widely praised for its seamless integration into the Apple ecosystem and its utility as a general-purpose fitness and health tracker. Users appreciate its heart rate monitoring, 'Find My iPhone' functionality, and its ability to reduce phone screen time by handling notifications on the wrist. However, it faces consistent criticism for its short battery life, which typically necessitates daily charging, and many users remain skeptical of its accuracy regarding caloric expenditure and sleep stages. While it is a capable tool for casual runners and gym-goers, it is often viewed as a sub-optimal replacement for specialized devices like dedicated bike computers.

Pros

  • Seamless integration with iPhone, AirPods, and other Apple devices.
  • Effective health monitoring, including heart rate alerts and pace tracking for runners.
  • High utility for daily tasks like 'Find My iPhone,' timers, and wrist-based navigation.
  • Surprisingly durable; users report the screen and body hold up well even after accidents.
  • Reduces distractions by allowing users to leave their phones in their pockets.

Cons

  • Short battery life usually requires daily charging, which many users find frustrating.
  • Calorie tracking and deep sleep data are frequently cited as inaccurate or unreliable.
  • Performance and reliability can suffer in cold weather conditions.
  • The small screen is difficult to read and lacks functionality compared to dedicated bike computers.
  • Water resistance claims are met with skepticism by some users after hardware issues.

Caveats

  • Caloric expenditure estimates should be treated as rough approximations rather than precise data.
  • Battery longevity during long GPS-tracked activities (like 8-hour rides) may be insufficient for older or heavily used models.
  • Sleep tracking, particularly deep sleep reporting, is often viewed as under-reported.

Best for

  • iPhone users who want a versatile smartwatch for fitness and notifications.
  • Casual runners who value pace features and heart rate monitoring.
  • People who frequently misplace their phones and need the 'Find My' feature.

Avoid if

  • You are unwilling to charge your watch every single day.
  • You require medical-grade accuracy for calorie burning or sleep stage tracking.
  • You are a serious cyclist looking for a full replacement for a dedicated bike computer.

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~398 days), so confidence is lower for this fast-changing hardware category.

Parent context: I’m running for about 30 mins at 6 speed with heart rate at about 160-170. Then 1 hour of lifting. But I agree it might be high, that’s just what my Apple Watch tells me Reply: the watch is full of shit

But like others have said, it is sub-optimal, not easy to read, and lacks much of the functionality that a bike computer provides.

Apple Watch fits the size requirements and now reads a power meter along with HR.

A late period (by 2-3 days, nothing I usually would have blinked over) was a symptom but actually it was my Apple Watch that spurred me to test. My resting heart rate jumped by an average of 20bpm and my Apple Watch sent a notification.

Parent context: Fully charged, my apple watch wouldn't make it 8 hours recording a bike ride. That was when it was new. Reply: My 2 year old series 7 used to make it 8 hours easy before I upgraded so I find that hard to believe unless your watch is dated or overused.

Where the chest strap shines is response speed during intervals. Personally, I tend to only use my chest strap when out on the bike or while inside on the treadmill. I just find for outdoor running, the sensor on my Apple Watch is good enough.

I also wanted to get to get an Apple watch as I wasn't really a big fan of the android watches.

For watches nothing comes close to Apple.

I noticed you wear an Apple Watch. I know you wrote that in Pipa it feels safe, but do you wear that watch in other South American cities that you travel to that might feel less safe, do you feel like that watch makes you a bit of a target since many people would recognize it as an expensive watch?

I think Apple excels at weareables, but it is also extremely expensive. I often see apple users migrating from apple watch to amazfit, and other non-leadership brands because they are really not returning as much.
