Failed on my NTG5 also. Rode replaced it.
I use an NTG5 outdoors and MKH50 indoors but I've discovered that the 50 usially does fine outside w a deadcat. The NTG5 has better reach and sounds awesome.

It has been corrected. I also had one of those faulty NTG5s where, at some random point, an electrical noise would take over its entire output. That has since been resolved. ... Great mic. Lightweight, short, and with a damn hot signal.
