Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The PlayStation 5 is widely regarded as a high-value gaming machine that offers performance difficult to match with a PC at the same price point. Users frequently highlight its excellent optimization, as developers target its specific hardware, and its versatility as a home theater component. However, the experience is tempered by recurring costs for online services and some lingering software-level HDR inconsistencies.

Pros

  • Exceptional price-to-performance ratio, often outperforming PCs in the $500-$600 range.
  • Highly optimized games that leverage fixed hardware specifications for smoother performance.
  • Strong integration into home theater setups as a reliable 4K media and gaming source.
  • Capable of upscaled 4K at 120Hz, providing a high-end visual experience on compatible displays.

Cons

  • Mandatory monthly subscription fees required for online multiplayer and cloud saves.
  • HDR implementation can cause the main menu to look 'washed out' on some monitors as it is designed for SDR.
  • More restrictive ecosystem and smaller game library compared to a mid-to-high-end PC.

Caveats

  • Users report that Sony has not addressed specific HDR-to-SDR transition issues on the dashboard.
  • Market pricing has historically been volatile and prone to hype-driven inflation during supply constraints.

Best for

  • Gamers on a $500-$600 budget who want a plug-and-play 4K experience.
  • Home theater enthusiasts looking for a versatile source for both gaming and 4K Blu-ray playback.

Avoid if

  • You are unwilling to pay recurring fees for online play and basic features like cloud saves.
  • You prioritize the 'freedom' and extensive library of a PC platform over hardware value.

On a PS5 you have zero benefit at either 1080p or 1440p. Consoles always output to 4k, so you'll see a large improvement.

Sometimes, after leaving an HDR game, your monitor will remain in HDR in the PS5 main menu screen and it will look washed out as it's designed for SDR-only, but simply ignore this. This is an issue that Sony seemingly refuses to address.

But due to the RAM crisis, they might delay the PS6 which means they will keep making games for the PS5 which means I can make my purchase more worth it. Like now I get to play more than just remasters and remakes of PS4 games.

If that’s your budget…I really hate myself for saying this in a way, but the ps5 might be your best option.

I only got one for a golf simulator. But I have no complaints about my 174” diagonal screen with my PS5!

Worth it right now? I mean, you can buy a PS5 pro and a PS5 for the price of ram and a SSD. 🫠 if you can find normalized pricing or wanting to wait, it’s 100% worth it.

In most cases PS5 games will run better. Developers spend a lot of time optimizing their games for the PS5 since it's just one singular hardware millions of people will use to run the game.
