I use 4070ti with 12gb VRAM, 1440p. Do not face any issue don't see VRAM usage going beyond 9-10gb on average.
12GB is fine, I have a 4070Ti in my DDR4 (11700K) build and it works great
FYI I did successfully get a free 4070 TI Super by challenging MSI on their box advertising not being compliment with disclosing expiration dates for free games and American express sided with me and refunded the entire gpu.
Oh shit OP if you need NVIDIA for work sooner rather than later I would get a used 4070 ti super. Saw one on eBay for $775 just now.
I bought the 4070 TI Super for a decent price (it was unpacked) and I'm really happy with it, but I wish we could go back to the times of the 10 or 20 series when the cards were much cheaper and provided more uplift.
Maybe consider the 4070ti Super, 4070 Super, 5070 Super, or 5070ti for other NVidia alternatives, though supply on those may be iffy as well in the current market.
Your system config is decent, upgrading the GPU to 9070xt or 4070ti super. Those are the VFM at present and would be a good upgrade.
Honestly if you can snag a 5080 thennjust go for it, otherwise id say look at the 5070 ti, rx9070 xt, if you dotn care for upscaling then RX 7900xtx, the 4080 and 4070 ti super (terrible name) are all beasts still today. From my dome those are the best non 5090 cards you can get today.
A 9070 (non xt) 16gb, or 4070 ti super would be my recommendation
