AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk WiFi is widely recommended on Reddit as a high-value AM5 motherboard that balances modern features with a competitive price. Users frequently highlight its inclusion of PCIe 5.0 support, WiFi 7, and 5Gb/s Ethernet as key advantages over older B650 models and more expensive X870E alternatives. While generally praised for its connectivity and storage expansion, some users remain cautious due to past brand experiences or specific BIOS flashing behaviors.

Pros

  • Supports PCIe 5.0 on both the primary x16 GPU slot and M.2 slots for future-proofing.
  • High-speed networking features including 5Gb/s Ethernet and WiFi 7.
  • Offers up to four M.2 slots, with some users noting a lack of lane-sharing interference with the primary GPU slot.
  • Significantly more affordable than high-end X870E or Asus Strix B850 counterparts.
  • Includes a physical clear CMOS button on the rear I/O for easier troubleshooting.

Cons

  • Some users report general brand hesitancy based on negative experiences with other MSI product lines.
  • VRMs are noted to be slightly weaker than enthusiast-tier boards, though only relevant for extreme 16-core overclocking.

Caveats

  • BIOS flashing can be a slow process, with reports of it taking up to 12 minutes to complete.
  • One user reported confusion regarding CPU compatibility, though it is an AM5 socket board.

Best for

  • Builders seeking a future-proof AM5 platform with PCIe 5.0 and WiFi 7 without paying X-series prices.
  • Users who require multiple NVMe SSDs (up to four) for storage-heavy builds.

Avoid if

  • You are planning extreme overclocking on a 16-core processor where premium VRMs are a priority.
  • You have a strong personal preference for other motherboard ecosystems like Asus or Gigabyte.

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~199 days) and comes almost exclusively from r/buildapc; confidence is medium as hardware specifications are stable but market alternatives may have shifted.

So get a motherboard like the B850 Tomahawk and you will be fine (almost all 8-series AtX motherboard oddly have their x16 slot in the first position, so they’re not options with your current configuration).

I like the B850 Tomahawk or B850 Aorus Elite.

Not only is the (at last glance) MSI B850 Tomahawk about $50 cheaper than Asus' B850 Strix, that doesn't even begin to scratch the price difference of $130 between the B850 Tomahawk and the X870E-H.

If you can't say what you need on that board versus something like an MSI B850 Tomahawk, chances are you don't need it.

To add more info: It also has one PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 slot, unlike the B650, which doesn't have one. Additionally, it has an x4 slot that is not sharing any lanes with the third M.2 slot on the motherboard, so you basically have four M.2 slots if wanted. It also has three ARGB ports instead of only two. It also has a clear cmos button too at the back. So it is even more worth getting the B850 version since it is more future proof.

I would pay for the B850 for those features, even if PCie 5 x16 doesn't provide a real benefit currently.

The B850 Tomahawk has PCie 5 lanes to the first x16 slot, along with faster ethernet (5gb/s vs 2.5gb/s) and wifi (Wifi 7 vs Wifi 6E). I would pay for the B850 for those features, even if PCie 5 x16 doesn't provide a real benefit currently.

The x670e hero has the most USB ports and 4 m.2 so I'd probably get that. or just get a B850 tomahawk, which has the same features.
