AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The MSI B850M Mortar is a premium mATX motherboard praised for its robust feature set, including 5G Ethernet, WiFi 7, and a strong VRM design capable of handling high-end CPUs like the 9800X3D. Users generally find it easy to build with and appreciate the inclusion of three M.2 slots. However, it is frequently noted as being more expensive than its competitors, and its physical layout presents specific challenges—most notably a tight clearance between the CPU socket and the primary PCIe slot that can interfere with large air coolers.

Pros

  • High-speed networking with 5G Ethernet and WiFi 7
  • Three M.2 slots, including support for Gen5
  • Robust VRM design that is often described as 'overkill' for current CPUs
  • Generous selection of USB ports
  • PCIe slot is located in the first position, which is preferred for many mATX cases

Cons

  • Premium pricing compared to other B850M alternatives
  • CPU socket and PCIe slot are closer than average, causing clearance issues with some large air coolers
  • Awkward SATA port orientation can make cable routing difficult in certain chassis
  • The rear M.2 slot may be limited to x2 speeds

Caveats

  • Check cooler compatibility carefully; specific models like the Sudokoo SK700 or large Arctic AIOs may have fitment issues
  • The board features lime green accents that may clash with certain build aesthetics
  • One user reported potential CPU latency/stuttering issues, though this was not a widely repeated claim

Best for

  • High-end mATX builds
  • Users with high-speed NAS setups requiring 5GbE
  • Builders who prioritize future-proofing with WiFi 7 and Gen5 storage

Avoid if

  • Using a massive air cooler that lacks a specific GPU offset
  • Building a budget-focused system where cheaper B850M options suffice
  • You require full x4 bandwidth on every M.2 slot

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age 383 days), and for fast-changing hardware like motherboards, this means current BIOS stability and market pricing may differ from these observations.

The only issue with the B850M mortar was the trap I fell into, CPU socket and PCI-E slot for GPU are much closer than other boards, so some big CPU air coolers without GPU offset might not fit.

Good all rounder for price, less risky than the tomahawk

Recently I have been having cpu latency issues causing unbelievable amount of stutters in games especially cpu bound ones like Valo and CS2. ... I have done extremely through testing from swapping peripherals, gpu etc and have narrowed down to either the CPU itself or the motherboard. ... (either my Ryzen 7 9800X3D or MSI MAG B850M Mortar WiFi).

I have MSI B850M Mortar and it has 4 SATA ports. The outmost 2 of the ports do not fit a SATA cable that would come straight from the chassis holes and I have to draw them over the holes, make a 180 degree turn and then to make the cables go to the hole.

Seems like a great board, doesn't sound like I would have any or many issues with drivers for Linux. The only negative for this board is that it is incompatible with the Sudokoo SK700 cooler I want.

I'm actually impressed how u manage to install the Arctic LF3 AIO, I thought it's incompatible with the b850m mortar due to its lower than usual CPU slot thus having lesser clearance than usual with the pcie slot.

I highly recommend the B850M Mortar. 3 x M.2 slots and looks pretty good.

Mortar had lots of extra features but was $75 more. ... It is a pretty uncompromising board. It is also super nice, feels really heavy and well built. Has a way overkill VRM for any current CPU.

They went in pretty smoothly on my old set up but this motherboard needed a little bit more 'push', took a while to figure this out.
