Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is a polarizing entry that shifts the series' traditional focus on isolation toward a more character-driven experience. While many players find the core gameplay loop addictive and the production values high, there is significant pushback regarding a talkative sidekick and hand-holding mechanics that some feel disrupt the atmosphere of the franchise.
Pros
- High-quality animations, facial expressions, and voice performances.
- Addictive core gameplay that successfully 'scratches the Metroid itch.'
- Inclusion of a casual/easy mode for better accessibility.
- Impressive visual presentation for the hardware.
Cons
- Talkative sidekick character (Myles/Mackenzie) that breaks the series' signature sense of solitude.
- Frequent radio interruptions and hints that can feel like excessive hand-holding.
- More linear level design compared to previous entries.
- Relatively short playtime, with reports of 10 hours for the story and under 20 for 100% completion.
- Frustrating escort-style mission mechanics.
Caveats
- The narrative shift toward 'psychic abilities and the power of friendship' is a departure from the series' darker roots.
- The central desert area is described as a 'Hyrule Field' style hub that some find lacking in content.
- Opinions on the sidekick's intrusiveness are mixed; some find it constant, while others find it manageable.
Best for
- Fans of the Prime series who are open to a more narrative-heavy and guided experience.
- Players looking for a high-production Nintendo adventure with modern accessibility options.
- Newcomers to the series who might find traditional Metroid exploration too opaque.
Avoid if
- You prioritize the 'eerie sense of solitude' and isolation found in earlier titles.
- You are sensitive to talkative companions or frequent gameplay interruptions.
- You are looking for a long, non-linear exploration game.

It’s hard not to be disappointed in this game, however I’m still glad to be playing it. There’s nothing else quite like Metroid Prime in the current gaming landscape
I think the best way to describe Prime 4 is "aggressively mediocre." 60 percent of the game is just OK. 10 percent of the game is up to the standard of prime 1 and 2. And that last 30 percent (looking at you, federation tagalongs) is just wowie zowie how did this design choice even get made. Also, this game has way too much telling me the story instead of showing me the story. [...] The levels are also waaaay too linear, and the pickups are too easy to find. This game is essentially metroid prime for little kids. I still liked it.... kinda.
Everything about this game just feels okay. Visually looks pretty nice at times. The biomes are alright. The NPCs and dialogue are bad. But it all just feels so empty.
Fantastic game so far. Yes, it has its problems, but I'm really enjoying it.
I haven't gotten a chance to play much so far but am enjoying the Switch one version.
The desert is essentially a “Hyrule Field” which admittedly could be more fleshed out with stuff to do, but this is a great, beautiful game. Go in with an open mind as it still scratches that Prime/Metroid itch imo
It’s a lot of fun, it’s why I bought my switch 2 and I’ve enjoyed many other games but this one’s great too so I’m happy
Played an hour or so, and I love it so far. Even the Mackenzie character isn't that bad, and he's not "cOnStAnTlY" talking to you.
Is it me, or is 10 hours of story line and like under 20 hours for 100% completion extremely short ?
On a few occasions - usually after finishing one dungeon but before you have the necessary skills to enter another - the game casts you fully loose to figure out how to get the keys you need on your own. But this only goes so far - take too long, or enter an area that is irrelevant at that point, and Myles will pop up on the radio eagerly. 'Hey, Samus - wasn't there a door you couldn't open in the volcano?' ...god damnit.
