AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Donkey Kong Banana (frequently referred to as 'Bananza') is a highly polished action-adventure title celebrated for its satisfying destruction mechanics, fluid movement, and innovative collectible systems. Users frequently highlight the game's consistent internal physics and high production value, including its soundtrack and voice acting. However, the game is polarizing as a platformer; while many find it consistently fun, others criticize it for being too easy, repetitive, and lacking the challenge found in traditional platforming titles, particularly regarding its boss fights.

Pros

  • Satisfying and predictable destruction physics that integrate well with puzzles
  • Smooth, seamless controls and movement mechanics
  • Innovative collectible systems, including treasure maps and 'Sonar Slam' for finding items
  • High-quality audio, including an acclaimed OST and satisfying voice clips
  • Large game world with significant polish and charming art style
  • Ability to farm items offline rather than relying on online play

Cons

  • Low difficulty level; bosses are often defeated before their mechanics are even learned
  • Gameplay can feel repetitive to some players after a few hours
  • Weak as a traditional platformer, focusing more on terrain interaction than precision jumping
  • The 'Bananza' mechanic can make combat and challenges feel trivial

Caveats

  • Default jump controls (A button) may feel unintuitive, though an in-game option exists to swap A and B
  • Some users felt that major version updates did not provide a significant amount of new content
  • The game is noted as a Switch 2 exclusive, limiting its availability on older hardware

Best for

  • Players who enjoy physics-based destruction and environmental puzzles
  • Completionists who appreciate well-organized checklists and rewarding collectible systems
  • Fans of high-production Nintendo titles who prioritize 'fun factor' over high difficulty

Avoid if

  • You are seeking a challenging platformer with complex boss patterns
  • You prefer traditional platforming mechanics over terrain-breaking puzzles
  • You are easily bored by repetitive gameplay loops

The fact that you can farm treasure chests to locate bananas and fossils instead of venturing online made this game for me.

I really liked jump on A if only because I liked the intuitive punching (X is punch up, Y is punch forward; and B is punch down).

I saw the 10/10 from IGN and fully expected to click Metacritic and see 94-96. Still, great scores.

I think the controls and smooth gameplay really make it. The destruction is really satisfying but also very controllable and the transitions to climbing etc. are seamless.

Very happy they gave the in-game option to switch A and B because it felt super unintuitive to me to not use B for jumping.

I held off at launch, but got mine about a month later, the day Bananza came out. I had a blast with it and it's probably my 2025 GOTY.

I actually never finished it. People said it got better later and I kept pushing forward waiting to see that but finally couldn’t play anymore.

It's a good game. I 100%ed it. I liked it. ... Honestly even having a lot of genetic similarity to Mario Odyssey, it doesn't achieve the same completeness of experience that that game had. ... The bosses had a few cool designs, but most of them were way too easy, and then the challenge version boss rush added difficulty in all the wrong ways, making for a highly frustrating and minimally rewarding experience.
