AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Metroid Prime 4 is characterized as a visually ambitious title that pushes the limits of Nintendo's hardware, though the experience varies significantly between console generations. While the game maintains a stable 60fps on original hardware, it is increasingly viewed as a showcase for a 'Switch 2' successor, where it benefits from higher resolutions, HDR, and significantly faster load times. Sentiment is generally positive regarding the technical achievement, but mixed concerning gameplay changes, specifically a perceived shift toward more linear combat and away from traditional Metroidvania exploration.

Pros

  • Stable 60fps performance even on original Switch hardware.
  • High-quality visual presentation and effective use of HDR.
  • Significant technical upgrades on newer hardware, including 120fps support and higher resolutions.
  • Strong art direction that maintains the series' atmosphere without relying on ultra-realism.

Cons

  • Extremely long load times on the original Switch, sometimes exceeding a minute between zones.
  • Slow scanning mechanics (approx. 5 seconds per scan) that can feel tedious in scan-heavy rooms.
  • Handheld mode on the original Switch is reported to look 'rough' or blurry.
  • Pacing issues caused by frequent combat encounters and 'hordes of enemies'.

Caveats

  • The game includes NPCs and tutorials that some long-time fans feel are out of place in a Metroid title.
  • There are reports of long-standing pre-orders being cancelled by retailers like Amazon.
  • Significant disparity in the 'quality of life' experience between original and next-gen hardware.

Best for

  • Players with newer Nintendo hardware looking for a high-performance (120fps) showcase.
  • Long-time fans of Retro Studios' atmospheric world-building.
  • Players who prioritize stable frame rates over high resolution on older hardware.

Avoid if

  • You are sensitive to long loading screens and frequent transition cutscenes.
  • You prefer pure, non-linear exploration without NPC interaction or guided tutorials.
  • You find repetitive scanning mechanics to be a dealbreaker for gameplay flow.

It would be great to have in Metroid prime 4 for example which on my 4k monitor has quite a bit of aliasing even in the 4k quality mode.

Playing Prime 4 at 1080p/120 on my TV was honestly one of the best gaming experiences I’ve had all year. So silky smooth.

I’m really enjoying the game. And Retro really understands how to use HDR.

I like the game but I think this was a 'just send it' decision from Nintendo after being in development hell for so long.

But, after a few hours with MP4, I’ve come to realise that the game is not a Metroidvania, it doesn’t really let you explore, throws hordes of enemies at you which destroy the pace, and has parts which look completely out of place in a Metroid game (Vi-o-la tutorial, empty desert, NPCs). Hopefully it becomes better along the way.

Parent context: It drags the experience so much. There’s a half dozen QoL things they need to just tweak Reply: When I first started playing I thought it was funny how npcs were all like “ALRIGHT WE GOTTA GO DO THIS QUICK! HURRY!” And I’m all like “chill baby, I gotta do some scans”

I wish the scanning was faster too. It’s crazy that it takes 5 seconds to scan stuff when you have 10+ new things to scan in every room and when you can’t scan things more than 20 min away…

I'd say the zones take like 30-60 seconds to load. A load entering zone and a load leaving. It's annoying, but it's nothing awful.

I think it looks amazing. It's a prime game. It's not going for ultra realism.

Graphically the game looks great. Haven't had any issues with fps. Only issue I can see is load times. Both booting the game up and loading a zone takes a bit. But it's nothing crazy awful imo
