Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Lexar NM790 is highly regarded as a high-value Gen 4 NVMe SSD that frequently outperforms its price point. It is often recommended as a superior alternative to slower budget drives and a more affordable option compared to premium Gen 4 competitors, though its value proposition is highly dependent on current market fluctuations.

Pros

  • Excellent price-to-performance ratio
  • Often significantly cheaper than other mainstream Gen 4 SSDs
  • Recommended as a faster alternative to budget drives like the NV3
  • Available in high capacities including 2TB and 4TB models

Cons

  • Potential for hardware detection issues (one report of drive not being detected in BIOS)

Caveats

  • Market pricing is volatile; users noted that Gen 5 drives can occasionally be found for similar prices
  • Value depends heavily on regional availability and specific retailer discounts

Best for

  • PC builders seeking high-performance Gen 4 storage on a budget
  • Users looking for a cost-effective alternative to premium brands like Samsung
  • High-capacity storage upgrades

Avoid if

  • A Gen 5 SSD is available for the same or lower price
  • You prefer a brand with a longer-standing reputation for high-end reliability

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~201 days), which is relevant for hardware as pricing and competing models change quickly.

SSD is also overpriced; a Gen4 Lexar NM790 is half that.

On x-kom.pl, the cheapest good drives are the Lexar NM790 or Sandisk SN7100.

Depending on where you are and the day of the week, a Samsung 990 Evo Plus, Lexar NM790, Seagate FireCuda 540, or Crucial T705 might all be much less expensive.

while the NM790 is certainly a good SSD, you can get a Gen 5 SSD for the same price or less these days. I normally tell people to avoid them because they aren't normally worth the price. But since they're often *less* expensive than many Gen 4 SSDs they're an excellent option.

TLC alternatives would be the Acer FA100, Ediloca EN870, Lexar NM790, Patriot P320, or Acer Predator GM7.
