Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The iPad mini is highly regarded as a versatile, portable tablet that bridges the gap between a smartphone and a full-sized iPad. It is a favorite for reading manga and comics due to its 8-inch form factor and color display, and it is surprisingly popular for niche uses like mobile music production. While praised for its longevity and ecosystem integration, it faces consistent criticism regarding its high price and the eye strain caused by its non-e-ink screen during long reading sessions.

Pros

  • Excellent portability for reading manga, comics, and mahwas
  • Versatile performance for music production apps (synths, Koala, Aum)
  • High durability and longevity, with users reporting 7-8 years of daily use
  • Strong integration with the Apple ecosystem and shared apps
  • Compact size is ideal for professional use-cases like classroom casting

Cons

  • Expensive compared to dedicated e-readers and Android alternatives
  • Screen can cause eye strain during reading sessions exceeding two hours
  • Noticeably heavier than dedicated e-ink devices like the Boox Go 7
  • Battery requires daily charging, unlike e-ink readers that last days
  • Small screen size can be restrictive for intensive note-taking

Caveats

  • The screen technology is a major point of contention for dedicated readers used to e-ink
  • Users often feel compelled to buy it due to ecosystem lock-in despite price concerns

Best for

  • Reading manga and color-rich digital media
  • Portable music production and mobile 'app stuff'
  • Users wanting a small tablet that will remain functional for many years

Avoid if

  • You primarily read long-form text and are sensitive to screen-induced eye strain
  • You are on a tight budget and only need basic reading functionality
  • You require a large screen for primary note-taking

I wish they would bring the price of the iPad mini down; that's the one I really want

I bought a tab s6 lite a few years ago and yesterday I caved and upgraded to an iPad mini. For me probably the biggest issue is the lack of integration and shared apps with my other Apple devices since Mac OS unfortunately has me by the balls.

it seems like the option that makes the most sense is one of the iPad minis. I was hoping to get away from iOS so I have more options, but I’m wondering if with what I’m looking to use it for, the iPad mini is just the best choice after all.

I like the iPad Mini but want to stay with Android. Also it's kinda expensive

I ended up buying Ipad mini, any ipad larger than this, is inconvenient in reading, this is the best size, but it has cons too: 1. price - it’s waay more expensive than Boox go 7. 2. Screen - this is not an eink screen, so if you read a lot, it’s gonna hurt your eyes, doesn’t matter what settings you choose, you’ll see the difference anyway. 3. weight- Ipad mini is heavier than Boox Go 7 and it is noticeable if you read a lot. 4. Battery - you will have to change it daily, Boox battery will last for several days. But pros for Ipad mini 1. usability - you can watch movies, use for social media, video calls etc. you got it. 2. Colored books, comics, mahwas - all look waaaaaay better on Ipad mini.

Technically for manga you need an 8inch screen like rhe ipad mini or galaxy tab 8, i believe the ipad mini can have a decent proportion of the traditional tankobon (physical mangal)

E-ink ereaders aren’t good for that use. iPads or iPad Minis are much better for that.
