Intel Core Ultra 7 265K
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The Intel Core Ultra 7 265K is positioned as a productivity-focused processor that excels in multi-core workloads such as video editing, rendering, and machine learning. While users praise its efficiency and performance in professional applications—often citing it as a strong competitor to the Ryzen 9 9900X—it is frequently described as a lateral move or even a downgrade for gaming compared to AMD's X3D series and older Intel generations.
Pros
- Excellent performance in productivity tasks like DaVinci Resolve, photo editing, and 3D rendering.
- Strong price-to-performance ratio for professional and multi-core workloads.
- Supports ECC memory when paired with compatible motherboards.
- Improved efficiency and thermal management compared to some previous high-end Intel chips.
- Competitive multi-core performance that rivals the Ryzen 9 9900X.
Cons
- Underwhelming gaming performance, often trailing behind the AMD 7800X3D and even older Intel 12th/13th gen CPUs.
- Platform longevity concerns with some users noting a lack of a clear future upgrade path.
- Reports of stability issues (WHEA errors) when using aggressive turbo modes or overclocking.
- Higher power draw and heat generation compared to specific AMD competitors in certain scenarios.
Caveats
- Gaming performance is highly sensitive to the specific title and may not show improvement over older hardware.
- The value proposition depends heavily on whether the user prioritizes professional software over gaming.
- Some users report that while the chip is efficient in productivity, it still requires robust cooling for peak workloads.
Best for
- Video and photo editors using software like DaVinci Resolve or Adobe Creative Cloud.
- Machine learning and rendering workloads that benefit from high core counts.
- Workstation builds requiring ECC RAM support.
Avoid if
- Your primary use case is high-end gaming.
- You are looking for a platform with a guaranteed long-term CPU upgrade path.
- You already own a high-end 13th or 14th gen Intel processor and only use it for gaming.

I'll be building with 5070ti and ultra 7 265k (yes, i know AMD is better for gaming; gaming is a secondary objective for me; I'll be using video/photo editing and rendering software that will be better with the intel chip).
Intel Ultra has been very reliable, and that's the past 2 years.
The U9-285K doesn't have those issues and is only slower in games but faster with the rest.
Thanks for your reply, I don't know if I'll follow your advice. But I'll take your point of view into account. ... CPU [Intel Core Ultra 7 265K 3.9 GHz 20-Core Processor]
I paid £1800 for a Dell Max Pro Slim Tower Ultra 7 265K, 64GB ECC, 1.5TB NVMe, nVidia Slimline A1000 GPU, large heatsink/fan, 360PSU. I probably still overpaid, but I think it's worth it a I have the warranty and proSupport package added too (next day on site support if needed). And above all its a stable machine.
I bought the 265k, 64gb ecc ram, a1000 GPU. Solid reliable machine so far
I ended up sticking with the 265K. I'd already bought it, but I saw the 285 going or about £180 less (over the cost of the whole machine), but I'd have to give up my ECC ram for non-ECC.
Thoughts on this spec? * **Processor:** Intel® Core™ Ultra 7 265K (20 cores, up to 5.50 GHz Turbo, 125W)
The first one if you have to choose one of these but like for the price neither is really good.
as a 265k user, its brilliant.
