Intel Core i9-9900K
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The Intel Core i9-9900K is frequently discussed as the 'end-of-the-line' upgrade for the LGA 1151v2 socket. While it remains a capable performer for 1080p and 1440p gaming, its reputation is defined by extreme power consumption and high operating temperatures. Sentiment is generally negative regarding its current value, as users often find it overpriced on the used market compared to newer, more efficient platforms that offer better performance for the same cost.
Pros
- The absolute best CPU upgrade available for the LGA 1151v2 (Z390) platform.
- Still provides solid performance for gaming at 1080p and 1440p.
- High overclocking ceiling, with users reporting stable 5.0GHz all-core clocks with sufficient cooling.
Cons
- Extremely power hungry, with the ability to pull over 200W under load.
- Runs very hot, often requiring high-end liquid cooling to avoid thermal throttling.
- Poor price-to-performance ratio on the used market compared to modern budget CPUs.
- Can act as a significant bottleneck for modern high-end GPUs like the RTX 3090.
Caveats
- Requires a motherboard with robust power phases (VRMs); budget boards may struggle or fail under its power draw.
- Performance gains over an i7-9700K may be marginal in gaming despite the higher cost.
Best for
- Users already on a Z390 platform who want the maximum possible performance without a full system rebuild.
- Legacy builds where a platform upgrade is not financially feasible.
Avoid if
- You are building a new PC from scratch.
- You are using a budget motherboard with weak power delivery (e.g., 3+1 phase).
- You want a power-efficient or cool-running system.
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median source age of approximately 200 days, which is relevant for this legacy hardware but means current used-market pricing may have shifted since these reports.
Sentiment
30 positive (33%) · 12 mixed (13%) · 49 negative (54%)
Trust + time weighted score: -19% · raw score -21%

To put it into perspective the 9900k is 8 years old and pretty much top of its build tree. It is by no means a dud, it is pretty powerful for 1080p/1440p gaming but it is also power hungry compared to newer CPUs that are more power efficient.
The best CPU you can upgrade to is a i9-9900K. Throw a small overclock on it, paid with some good DDR4 at 3800MHz and above with tight secondaries and tertiaries via manual tuning and maybe a 3080 Ti/4070Ti or 7900 XTX and you're in the best spot your platform can give you.
In my area theres a 9900k 2070 16gb ram build for $550.
That 9900k is still pretty solid honestly, especially for gaming.
Nah, for my (perhaps overly ambitious) OC on an i9-9900k all-core 5.0Ghz (core clock multi 50x) 4.7Ghz Ring ratio (47x ring multi) 1.35v Vcore, EVGA 360mm CLC which resides in an MSI Z390-A Pro will either black screen > power cycle, or simply freeze entirely unresponsive with the screen still showing whatever it showed at the moment of freezing, which requires a hard-reset by holding my power button, but as long as you've got thermal headroom there's no inherent risk from a kernel panic such as this in and of itself.
id buy a i9-9900ks if the motherboard supports it (god knows with intel) and a new gpu instead.
He is already pushing great frames in those games is my point. Those aren't demanding at all.
I found a User Motherboard which was Not Used to much With an I9-9900K and 32gb of RAM, which should be much bettet then my current system.
I have Major cpu bottleneck issues in most games
My current rig is intel i9 9900K cpu, 2080 super, corsair 16gb ram, asus prime z390 p motherboard.
