AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Intel Core i9-12900K is characterized as a powerful flagship processor that remains relevant, particularly for users who want to avoid the instability and oxidation issues reported in 13th and 14th generation Intel chips. While it is described as a 'beast' for productivity tasks like video encoding, it is notorious for high power consumption and extreme operating temperatures, often requiring high-end cooling solutions and Z-series motherboards to reach its full potential.

Pros

  • Avoids the high-profile instability and oxidation issues associated with 13th and 14th gen Intel CPUs
  • Strong performance in productivity workloads such as video compression (Handbrake)
  • Capable of maintaining high frame rates at 1440p in many modern titles
  • Flexible platform support for both DDR4 and DDR5 memory

Cons

  • Extremely high power draw, with reported transient spikes reaching up to 300W
  • Runs very hot, with some users reporting temperatures between 80-100°C during gaming
  • Gaming performance is increasingly surpassed by newer, more efficient mid-range CPUs
  • Requires a significant amount of force to install in the LGA 1700 socket

Caveats

  • Requires a high-quality cooler and a Z-series motherboard to operate at peak performance
  • Users report inconsistent performance in specific titles like CS2, where it may struggle to maintain high FPS even on low settings
  • The LGA 1700 platform installation process is noted by some as being more difficult than previous generations

Best for

  • Productivity-focused users who prioritize video encoding and multi-threaded tasks
  • Builders seeking a high-end Intel system while avoiding the reliability concerns of newer generations
  • Users already on the LGA 1700 platform looking for a stable flagship upgrade

Avoid if

  • You have a limited cooling solution or a small-form-factor case with poor airflow
  • Your primary goal is maximum gaming efficiency or performance-per-watt
  • You are unwilling to deal with high power consumption and heat output

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~197 days), and since hardware performance is a fast-changing category, confidence is medium as newer competitors may have shifted the value proposition.

The 12900ks is a very nice cpu. The is no reason to sell it.

Wanting to move from my i9-12900K and RTX 4070 to a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and an RX 9070 XT.

I'm idling at around 50c and in game its around 80-100c. It's not dust as I clean my pc out every 2 weeks, nothing is overlocked right now.

I've resigned myself to likely needing to upgrade the motherboard and RAM to DDR5 (and sell the DDR4?) and just pay the current _insane_ prices (Fuck you Micron! As someone got money back from the class action lawsuit last time you guys conspired to defraud).

In CS2 my i9-12900K already struggles to hold ~300 FPS consistently, even on all low, both at 1080p and 1440p

The 12900ks is a very powerful cpu even today but potentially can run hot, so ensure you use a decent cooler.

Plus, the i9-12900K is a beast which need a Z motherboard to fully activate its full potential.

I strongly advise against upgrade to a 14900K. The 13th and 14th gen Intel chips suffered from high profile instability and oxidation issues that the 12900K avoided.

That's how I felt when I installed my LGA1700 Intel Core i9-12900k (also requires a lot of force. For whatever reason people talk about AM5 being difficult more often. I remember how much easier AM4 was).
