Intel Core i5-6600K
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The Intel Core i5-6600K is widely considered obsolete for modern gaming, with users reporting that its 4-core/4-thread architecture severely bottlenecks even older mid-range GPUs like the RTX 2070. While it remains a functional choice for basic server tasks or very light computing, it frequently causes stuttering, lag, and poor frame rates in contemporary titles.
Pros
- Functional for basic home server use
- Low power consumption for non-gaming tasks compared to systems with active dedicated GPUs
Cons
- Severe bottlenecking for modern graphics cards, leading to lower frame rates
- Insufficient core and thread count for modern AAA games
- Causes significant stuttering and lag in titles like Spider-Man 2 and Helldivers 2
- General system sluggishness during boot-up and application loading
Caveats
- Users describe the 6th-gen i5 as 'ancient' and 'outdated' for current software demands
- Performance in modern games may result in 'pixelly mush' even on the lowest settings
Best for
- Basic home servers
- Light office work
- Playing older or retro games
Avoid if
- You intend to play modern AAA titles
- You are pairing it with an RTX 20-series GPU or newer
- You require a snappy experience for modern multitasking
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~210 days), and because CPU performance requirements change rapidly, this data may not reflect the even steeper performance drops expected in the newest software.

The 2070 Super is obviously the stronger card, but I’m worried the 6th gen i5 and the lack of an SSD will make Spider-Man 2 stutter or lag like crazy.
probably going to keep the i5 then though i wasnt sure whether id get any gains from the 6c/12t vs the 4c/4t despite the age, thanks for the reply
Current setup: CPU: Intel core i5-6600K Skylake
i have this old set of mine i5-6600k(Broken?)
Option 2. That 6600k will choke the 2070 so hard you will be getting lower frame rates than the 2060 system.
The i5 no question. I dont see the point of keeping the GPU in the server. Its just going to waste electricity.
I've been running this build for a number of years now, and mostly getting by, usually playing older games. However, trying to play Helldivers 2, or more recently Marathon, and I've had to lower the settings so far down that everything is a bit of a pixelly mush, so I'm considering upgrading (before prices get even worse).
My specs are CPU: i5 6600k Gpu: NVIDIA GTx 1070 Ram: ddr4 16gb Motherboard: Rog maximus IX
My current setup; Intel i5-6600K
my current pc is starting to poop its own pants from dementia. Poor thing keeps getting video failure blue screens.
