Intel Core i3-12100F
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The Intel Core i3-12100F is frequently described as a 'little beast' for budget-conscious builders, offering surprisingly strong single-core performance for its price point. While it excels in esports and specific applications like Minecraft servers, its quad-core architecture is increasingly viewed as a 'bare minimum' that may struggle with stuttering or poor 1% low frame rates in modern, multi-threaded AAA titles.
Pros
- Strong single-core performance, specifically noted as being 30–34% faster than a Ryzen 5 3600 for Minecraft servers
- Excellent value for budget builds, frequently cited at a sub-$100 price point
- Supports PCIe 4.0, which is beneficial for modern GPUs
- Low power requirements allow it to maintain max turbo speeds easily on most motherboards
Cons
- 4-core/8-thread configuration is becoming dated and can cause stuttering in modern games
- Potential to bottleneck higher-end GPUs like the RTX 4070
- Poor 1% low FPS reported in some demanding titles, leading to a 'grippy' or inconsistent feel
- Slower compile times for productivity tasks like coding compared to 6-core alternatives
Caveats
- The LGA 1700 socket has a finite upgrade path, ending with 14th Gen Intel processors
- Users often debate between this and the Ryzen 5 5500, with the i3 winning on single-thread gaming but losing on core count
Best for
- Budget-constrained gaming builds
- Minecraft server hosting
- Esports titles and 1080p gaming
- Entry-level office or productivity machines
Avoid if
- You intend to play modern AAA titles that heavily utilize more than 4 cores
- You are pairing it with a high-end GPU where a bottleneck is likely
- Your workflow involves heavy multitasking or frequent code compilation

Too bad i already got the arc b580 lol.. but talk about upgrading my cpu should i go LGA 1700 for the i3 12100f or the AM4 ryzen 5 5600?
I got a replacement, got the BIOS updates with the 0x12F microcode fix but it also didn't help, and though my windows hasn't crashed I still switched back to my i3 because it still performed better.
An i3-12100F is $90 on Amazon and would offer better hardware encoding than your setup.
The 12100/F is a little beast of a 4 core CPU, although am upgrade down the line would be nice.
I'm looking to upgrade my CPU, both for productivity and gaming. (I code so it will help with compile times, and I think my i3 is bottlenecking my 4070.)
i've got recommended a B760-PLUS DDR4 motherboard + Intel Core i5 12400F 2.5Gz, or i3 12100F (budget option).
For a modded Minecraft server, go with Intel Core i3‑12100F. It has much stronger single-core performance (about 30–34% faster than AMD Ryzen 5 3600), which matters most because Minecraft servers rely heavily on one core.
But currently, both on Very High and Very Low graphics- and with ALL settings adjustments possible in the game (I tried all of it), the performance issue is the same: BAD Low1% FPS. The average FPS is always 90-105 even on Ultra. But the Low1% ranges in 28-45 almost all the time. So the game feels grippy.
The system works perfectly with the i3-12100F.
Until I played a game that recently opened its CBT on Steam, I found that my CPU seemed almost insufficient in terms of performance, even though I hadn't played many high-spec games before. So I thought I should try upgrading my CPU again. And yes, the same problem has returned.
