Pros

  • If you go with IHG, not a bad idea to pick up their Chase credit card. Gives you auto Platinum status, a free night, and extra points.
  • IHG has a check box to include taxes and fees.
  • IHG and Hilton are both very similar, though Hilton has devalued my points twice now by increasing the amount required to get free nights at most locations, and IHG is MUCH better at actually trying to give you the complimentary room upg...

Cons

Finally, IHG has a much inferior program in terms of benefits, but Spire Elite is easy to earn and you can buy your way into InterContiential Ambassador status relatively inexpensively (which is quite good but only helpful at ICs, not at other IHG properties). Brand standards are also much weaker at the lower end brands, so you can't quite rely on Holiday Inn the way you can Hampton Inn (for example). However there are all kinds of properties in all kinds of weird places, especially in rural areas. They are also quite good about soft recognition for elites outside of the stated benefits.
