AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Iberia is generally regarded as a standard full-service airline that offers good on-time performance and competitive pricing, particularly for nonstop routes. However, it is frequently criticized for poor customer service during flight disruptions and a high rate of baggage issues during connections at its Madrid hub. While it is considered a step up from ultra-low-cost carriers, users report significant frustration with its technical systems and its handling of compensation claims.

Pros

  • Reliable on-time performance
  • Competitive pricing for nonstop flights that include checked bags
  • Better service and amenities than ultra-low-cost carriers (ULCCs)

Cons

  • Poor customer support and lack of accountability during flight disruptions
  • High risk of lost or delayed luggage when connecting through Madrid (MAD)
  • Difficult and unhelpful EU261 compensation claim process
  • Strict policy against through-checking baggage on separate tickets

Caveats

  • Travelers booking through partner airlines (e.g., American Airlines) often face technical issues with seat selection and online booking management
  • Staff may be unhelpful or blame passengers for system-originated errors, such as name discrepancies on boarding passes

Best for

  • Nonstop flights to Spain
  • Travelers seeking a full-service experience at a reasonable price point

Avoid if

  • You have a tight connection in Madrid with checked luggage
  • You are traveling on separate tickets and need baggage transferred
  • You prioritize responsive customer service for rebooking or claims

I think Iberia's minconnect through MAD does not take luggage (or at least that particular airport's ability to transfer luggage)into account.

Iberia's policy is to not through-check luggage on separate tickets. And while I, too, have never waited more than 15 mins or so for exit passport control, there are plenty of stories of 90+ minute waits at random times.

No worry, I assume it is in a single ticket with Iberia so your bags will go straight to Granada.

To make matters worse, Iberia later claimed that the situation was entirely our fault, arguing that we should have checked the name on the boarding pass more carefully, despite the fact that the issue originated from their own system and was acknowledged as such by their staff.

There was no assistance from Iberia, no rebooking support, no accountability, we were completely on our own to fix the situation.

you should be ok since both flights are with Iberia and on the same booking. airlines usually don’t sell connections they know are impossible.. have a safe flight.

Iberia is a good airline, but Madrid misplaces more checked bags than is ideal.

Iberia is a quite good airline, fantastic on-time performance, but are rightfully disliked by many because their bags got lost during a connection at Madrid.

It's a fine airline. Nothing exceptionally good or bad but they're not a ULCC like Wizz/Ryan/Air Europa
