Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Herman Miller Aeron is a highly regarded ergonomic office chair frequently recommended for its exceptional durability and long-term back support. While many users swear by its mesh suspension for daily desk work, it is a polarizing product due to its rigid frame, which enforces a specific sitting posture and can be uncomfortable for those who prefer alternative positions.

Pros

  • Extreme longevity, with users reporting 15-16 years of daily use without issues.
  • Excellent ergonomic support for the back and seat during long work sessions.
  • Strong availability on the used and refurbished market, often found at office liquidations for a fraction of the retail price.
  • Breathable mesh material provides comfort and cooling.
  • High resale value and a reputation as a 'Buy It For Life' staple.

Cons

  • The hard plastic rim of the seat can dig into the legs, especially for users who sit cross-legged or tuck a leg under.
  • Polarizing comfort levels; some users find it significantly less comfortable than competitors like the Steelcase Leap or Herman Miller Embody.
  • High retail price makes it inaccessible for many unless purchased used or refurbished.
  • The rigid design makes it 'almost impossible' to sit in non-standard positions.

Caveats

  • The chair is designed for a specific upright posture; if you don't sit 'correctly,' the suspension frame may cause discomfort.
  • Fit is highly subjective and depends on body type; some slim or smaller-framed users reported a poor fit compared to other ergonomic models.

Best for

  • Standard desk jobs and long-term daily office use.
  • Users who prefer a mesh seat over traditional foam padding.
  • Budget-conscious buyers willing to shop the used/refurbished market for high-end gear.

Avoid if

  • You frequently sit cross-legged or with one leg tucked under you.
  • You prefer a soft, plush, or highly adjustable seat that allows for slouching.
  • You are buying new and have a strict budget, as retail prices are high.

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~312 days), which is generally acceptable for a stable physical product like an office chair, though specific used-market price points may have shifted.

The mesh of the Aeron is comfortable, but the hard portion it is suspended from makes sitting like I like almost impossible.

Hermen Miller Aeron, get a refurbished one. I use it both at work and home and it did wonders for my Back and buttom.

I would only consider 2 brands, Steelcase and Herman Miller. Specifically the Amia or Aeron. These are trusted brands, with awesome warranties. Neither fit your budget.
