AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is widely regarded as the "gold standard" utility for completely removing graphics drivers. It is the go-to recommendation for users switching between GPU brands (Nvidia to AMD or vice versa) and for troubleshooting persistent issues like black screens, BSODs, or driver conflicts that standard uninstallers fail to resolve.

Pros

  • Effectively removes all driver remnants and registry traces that standard uninstallers leave behind.
  • Highly effective at resolving driver-related stability issues, such as black screens and BSODs.
  • Essential tool for switching GPU manufacturers to prevent software conflicts.
  • Helps fix specific display bugs like incorrect native resolution or refresh rate limits.

Cons

  • Some users report technical hurdles, such as options being greyed out in certain configurations.
  • The process can be intimidating for novice users unfamiliar with system-level maintenance.

Caveats

  • For best results, the tool should be run in Windows Safe Mode.
  • Users recommend disconnecting the internet during use to prevent Windows Update from automatically installing generic drivers before you can install the preferred ones.
  • Screen flashing or temporary black screens are normal during the driver removal process.

Best for

  • Users swapping graphics cards between different manufacturers.
  • Troubleshooting persistent driver-related crashes or performance issues.
  • Performing a truly 'clean' installation of new GPU drivers.

Avoid if

  • You are uncomfortable booting into Safe Mode or performing manual driver management.
  • Your current drivers are working perfectly and you are only performing a routine update.

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is based on a collection of mentions with a median age of approximately 202 days, reflecting a stable consensus for this utility.

If you are using a different gpu in the new rig, you will need to use DDU in safe mode to wipe the drivers for your old gpu before you install the drivers for your new gpu.

Download Display Driver Uninstaller, and uninstall your AMD drivers (not always necessary, but good practice).

I’d totally use DDU in Safe Mode to wipe old GPU drivers, then reinstall the latest NVIDIA one. Make sure Windows + BIOS are up to date too. That usually fixes these BSODs for me! 💕

I thought this might be the NVIDIA black screen driver problem, so I used DDU in safe mode to wipe drivers, then re-installed from NVIDIA's website.
