AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Countryman B3 is widely regarded in the location sound community as a rugged, high-value 'industry standard' lavalier microphone. It is frequently recommended as a significant step up from basic kit microphones due to its small, easy-to-conceal capsule and reliable sound quality at a mid-range price point.

Pros

  • Excellent value for the price, often cited around $200
  • Small capsule size makes it very easy to hide for film and video
  • Rugged build quality and durable design
  • Versatile connectivity options, including XLR and various wireless transmitter connectors
  • Significant audio quality improvement over standard kit mics like the Sennheiser ME2

Cons

  • Some users find the sound signature less appealing than cheaper alternatives like the Sennheiser ME2
  • Considered 'entry-level' compared to premium industry standards like Sanken or DPA

Caveats

  • While highly praised for its price-to-performance ratio, sound preference remains subjective among professionals
  • The capsule design is sometimes mistaken for other models when the protective cap is removed

Best for

  • Location sound recordists looking for a professional 'step up' microphone
  • Concealed microphone applications in film and television
  • Users needing a durable, industry-standard lavalier on a budget

Avoid if

  • You have the budget for higher-end industry standards like the Sanken COS-11D or DPA series
  • You specifically prefer the sound profile of the Sennheiser ME series

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median source age of approximately 575 days; however, this is generally acceptable for stable professional audio hardware.

I had a 12’ Ktek graphite pole and a 416 and two Sony UWP wireless with Countryman B3 lavaliers. I did a lot of projects with that kit and made it work for everything.

Unfortunately I can’t afford a Cos-11D, I wish I could. I do the best I can with the Countryman B3.

Don’t use the included lavalier with either of those systems, get something better. I use the Countryman B3.

I would also recommend the B3 because it's extremely rugged. It will handle water issues, too. ... The slightly cheaper B3 is better in some ways, even if the sound isn't quite as good.

I have 4 B3s that I’ve used in all conditions... My biggest complaint is the locking 3.5mm connector on the countryman sucks but it’s never failed me.

the B3 sounds OK, has good RFI rejection (if wired well), handles moisture (rain, sweat, etc), and is basically reliable.

I own a couple of B3s and very happy with them. I have a bunch of MKE-2 Blues and they are good, but not as good as the B3s.
