Comtek

Pros

• Get the industry standard which is Comtek, for a reason it’s been a standard.
• A zoom fx3 recorder and a comtek set with 1 transmitter and 2-3 receivers. Even the older crystal tuned ones still work. ... With the comteks, everyone can hear and this aids with directing, and camera if you want to do a move or focus p...
• Mine were doing this and have to have them serviced. There was an optional antenna upgrade and now they work flawlessly again.
• The most common system you’ll see for directors/clients is Comtek
• Comtek also makes a magnetic antenna that does the same thing. You wouldn’t get the Same range, but the quality would be better and way less latency.

Cons

• the lack of any shielding means they somehow sound worse with every passing year.
• $50/ea seems steep for comteks considering their sound quality + cost.. $50/ea would be more aligned with Sennheiser IEMs or Zaxcom URX.
• The culture around bringing a dozen or more IFB (that often go completely unused) and not charging the client a realistic rental feel is nuts. Charging $20/IFB is equally nuts. Between the cost of the Tx/Rx, headphones, and batteries.......
• Comtek fidelity is a compromise, but they have better range than anything else you’ll get for the price. I still use them, because I own them and they e paid for themselves many times over.
• I avoid comtek's like the plague. Theyre dated. The only reliable comtek setup in my experience is the base station that outputs 100mw for the pr216s. running that in a bag = back pain.
