Clindamycin
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Clindamycin is a prescription antibacterial treatment frequently used for inflammatory acne, often in combination with retinoids or benzoyl peroxide. While many users report success in clearing pustules and reducing redness, others find it ineffective as a standalone treatment or note that acne returns once the medication is discontinued.
Pros
- Effective at clearing active pustules and red, patchy skin
- Works well as a targeted spot treatment for individual breakouts
- Complements retinoid (tretinoin) routines when used as a morning treatment
- Can be relatively affordable via virtual appointments and insurance
Cons
- Acne may return to baseline levels shortly after stopping the treatment
- Results can be inconsistent, with some users seeing no significant improvement
- Potential for stinging or burning sensations, particularly when combined with other actives
- Ineffective against fungal acne and may exacerbate it by removing bacterial barriers
Caveats
- Often described as a short-term care option rather than a permanent solution
- Frequently requires combination therapy (like benzoyl peroxide) to be most effective
- May take several weeks to show results, leading some users to stop early due to perceived lack of progress
Best for
- Users with inflammatory acne or pustules
- People looking for an antibacterial boost to their existing tretinoin routine
- Short-term management of bacterial breakouts
Avoid if
- You have fungal acne, as it may worsen the condition
- You have extremely sensitive skin that reacts poorly to topical antibiotics
- You are seeking a one-time cure that does not require maintenance

The oral version has take my patchy red and at times the pustules I would get weekly into perfection.
I’ve also tried benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin, with no real success.
Ive used everything and for me- I started with Clindamycin which didnt have that much of an affect but when I got perscribed tret it helped allot with my acne.
Then if something oozes out immediately, I rinse with plain water, pat dry with a clean face tissue and put the pimple patch on. I don't leave it on for more than 6-7 hours and the only active I use on the pimple and surrounding skin for the next 24 hours is clindamycin.
Clindamycin is also an option, as is azelaic acid. Clindamycin is more short-term care. This along with a warm compress as the other comment mentioned and a pimple patch to avoid rupturing it and spreading the bacteria can help.
I used a gel clindamyacin and tret for about 2 years which was somewhat help at keeping things at bay but they never really got better.
I used to do clindamycin and/or benzoyl peroxide (sometimes together, sometimes separate).
The only thing that helps the most is clindamycin.
I used clindamycin for like 8 months straight and when I stopped, acne came back in about 3 weeks - not worse than before, just back to baseline
i’ve been taking that and using a salycilic acid fae wash and clindamycin every night plus a salycilic acid toner every other night and of course moisturize. and ive seen slight improvement but its not fully going away.
