Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Azelaic acid is widely praised on Reddit as a versatile treatment for redness, cystic acne, and post-inflammatory erythema (red marks). Users frequently recommend it as a gentler alternative to other acids, though it is noted for causing a distinct itching or stinging sensation upon application. While many see significant improvements in skin texture and tone, there is a strong consensus that it must be introduced slowly to avoid damaging the skin barrier, especially when using prescription-strength concentrations.

Pros

  • Effective at reducing redness and managing rosacea symptoms
  • Helps control and prevent cystic and fungal acne
  • Fades post-acne red marks and hyperpigmentation
  • Improves overall skin texture and pore appearance
  • Pairs well with other actives like tretinoin or adapalene for many users

Cons

  • Commonly causes an itching or stinging sensation during application
  • Can lead to skin purging in the initial weeks
  • High concentrations (15%+) can be too harsh for sensitive skin
  • Risk of skin barrier damage if used twice daily immediately without acclimation
  • May show no results for some users even after long-term use

Caveats

  • One user reported the acid stripped the protective coating off their eyeglasses where the lenses touched their cheeks
  • Should only be introduced once the skin barrier is healthy and hydrated
  • Prescription versions (like 15% gel) are often significantly more potent and irritating than 10% OTC options

Best for

  • Individuals with rosacea or persistent facial redness
  • Treating cystic acne and fading red post-acne marks
  • Users looking for a gentle chemical exfoliant that targets texture

Avoid if

  • You currently have a compromised or dehydrated skin barrier
  • You are unwilling to tolerate temporary itching or stinging sensations
  • You prefer immediate results, as it often requires several weeks to months to show efficacy

I use azelaic acid from my derm, an urea 10% lotion to keep it under control in the winter

Because every time I mention “even out skin tone” I end up with the same exact products like Azaelic acid or niacinimide or vitamin c that barely have any effect.

I use products that directly address my specific skin concerns, which for me are rosacea and eczema with dry skin. So I use a cleanser, a moisturizer, azelaic acid serum, sunscreen, and …

I use cosmetic azelaic acid and not Rx bc the Rx version was not tolerable to me.

I found just using azelaic acid daily and a mild retinol at night to be best for me. Azelaic acid is what works the best for my rosacea especially as I can’t tolerate Vit c, fragrance, essential oils and some other stuff.

I had/have the same problem but doxycycline and azealic acid worked yet she also prescribed winlevy and the sulfur wash for acne, I’ll say that everything except the AA worked almost immediately whereas the azealic acid took time.

I use Tretinoin at night and azelaic acid in the morning and every now and again I’ll use an acid toner at night instead of my tretinoin.

people with rosacea often see results from azealic acid. Some might need a prescription strength from the dermatologist but you can start off with an OTC 10% strength on your own. Start with every other day for a few weeks before going to every day to avoid irritation. Keep using the vitamin C if it is helping! Consider alternating between the vitamin C and azealic acid depending on results.

I've also been using Azelaic Acid - that's also not helping, unfortunately.
