AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Chromebooks are polarizing devices primarily valued for their low cost, simplicity, and inherent security against malware. They are frequently recommended for basic web-based tasks, media consumption, and students, but they face significant criticism for limited software compatibility and poor performance in gaming or heavy multitasking. While some users appreciate them as a budget-friendly alternative to tablets, others argue that a used Windows PC often provides better value and more utility for the same price.
Pros
- Affordable entry point for basic computing and web browsing
- High resistance to viruses and malware compared to traditional OSs
- Simple, user-friendly interface suitable for non-technical users
- Strong battery life on many models for cloud-based work
- Capable of running Linux apps for expanded functionality
Cons
- Incompatible with most PC games and Steam
- Limited support for specialized desktop applications and certain web surveys
- Budget models often feature low-resolution screens (e.g., 1366x768) and lack SSDs
- Performance can struggle or overheat during multitasking or split-screen use
Caveats
- Often described as a 'glorified tablet' rather than a full laptop replacement
- Repair costs for certain models can be disproportionately high relative to the device's value
- Performance varies significantly between ultra-budget and premium models
Best for
- Students focused on web-based assignments and Google Docs
- Basic media consumption like YouTube and streaming
- Users prioritizing security and ease of use over software flexibility
- Lightweight coding or Python development in cloud environments
Avoid if
- You need to play modern video games or use Steam
- Your workflow requires specific Windows or Mac-only software
- You require high-performance hardware for professional multitasking
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median source age of approximately 382 days; because hardware and software evolve quickly, this data may not reflect the most recent model improvements.

I put music on with a cheap Chromebook instead of a dap because I dont got dap money.
At that budget you're either looking at an old, used office PC, or a Chromebook.
Would a Chromebook work for you?
A Chromebook has the advantages of being dead simple basically not getting viruses.
Chromebook isn't very good for anything
Live off a laptop for a year? Chromebook?
I used a Chromebook (which is kinda-sorta Linux) which boots into Kiosk mode with a web page.
If you want real life battery above 10 hours then Chromebook is the only way. High battery optimization needs 100% input from manufacturer. Only possibility is Chromebook.
dont replace old garbage with equivalent new garbage, chromebooks are NOT the way, just buy a normal cheap laptop or a used one
You could get a used Chromebook for under $100 that would still be better than this
