AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

China Eastern Airlines is generally characterized by Reddit users as a budget-friendly but service-strained carrier. While it is frequently cited for offering some of the cheapest international fares and generous baggage allowances, these savings often come at the cost of a frustrating user experience. Common complaints include a difficult-to-use website, poor customer service accessibility, and strict administrative policies regarding ticket verification and compensation.

Pros

  • Highly competitive pricing and frequent 'cheap deals' for international travel
  • Generous baggage allowances, often including two 23kg checked bags
  • Generally lenient enforcement of carry-on weight limits according to some travelers
  • Decent legroom and food quality reported on domestic flight segments

Cons

  • Official website is frequently described as difficult to navigate or a 'nightmare'
  • Customer service can be very hard to reach, often requiring phone calls as the only reliable method
  • Flight delays and cancellations are reported as relatively common
  • Compensation for issues may only be offered via WeChat Pay or Alipay, which can be difficult for international travelers to access

Caveats

  • Strict credit card verification: Passengers may be required to show the physical card used for booking at check-in or face boarding denial
  • Routes may fly over Russian/Siberian airspace, which differs from many Western carriers
  • Transit through Chinese hubs like Shanghai (PVG) may require specific visa-free transit eligibility or onward flight proof

Best for

  • Budget-conscious travelers prioritizing low fares over service
  • Passengers traveling with significant amounts of luggage
  • Travelers comfortable navigating Chinese payment ecosystems like WeChat or Alipay

Avoid if

  • You require a reliable and easy-to-use online booking and management system
  • You have tight connections where a delay could cause significant disruption
  • You are unable to present the physical credit card used for the original booking

I flew with China Eastern several times, but only on short haul flights. They are one of the largest, but also one of the worst and cheapest among major Chinese airlines. At the same time, cancellations are not uncommon for Chinese airlines.

Yes, the lady on the phone was nice, spoke English and she helped me. But I’m afraid there is no other way to contact them if something goes wrong. Their website is a nightmare 😂

I know they are bad, but well, also cheap 😂 I guess you get what you pay for.

I’ve got a Premium Economy booking with BA (London → Shanghai) on the 15 April booked with Avios (120k), but I could switch to a China Eastern PE flight for about £200–£250 more per person. BA goes via Turkey/Georgia/Azerbaijan, while China Eastern goes over Russia/Siberia.

I had two nice flights with them, though I was doing domestic Chinese flights rather than international. The food was good and I had leg room.

China Southern, China Eastern, and Xiamen Air all fly to Amsterdam and usually offer really cheap deals to asia.

I have flown with them several times now. Not been weighed carry-on in the 10+ flights I've done. I had 2x 23kg check in luggage allowance so there is always the option to check your luggage. I have seen multiple people bring 3 or 4 bags into the cabin. So you will be fine with a suitcase, backpack and stuffed animal.

Last time I flew with them they had a free checked bag (I think most Chinese airlines do) so if you are worried you can check your carry-on luggage. Make sure to double check your luggage specifications though.

I'm thinking of booking through China Eastern but have also heard they're hard to get through to...

I noticed that the purchase confirmation email I received states that I may be asked at any time to show the payment card used to purchase the ticket online, to verify that the card and ticket holders are the same. Furthermore, if this request is not complied with, China Eastern Airlines reserves the right to cancel the ticket or deny boarding.
