The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV is widely considered one of the greatest professional DSLRs ever produced. Even as the industry shifts toward mirrorless systems, it remains a highly respected workhorse for professional portrait and wedding photography due to its rugged build, reliable performance, and excellent image quality.
Pros
- Exceptional image quality and color science in both RAW and JPEG
- Extremely durable and rugged professional build
- Proven reliability for high-stakes event and wedding photography
- Excellent value on the used market compared to modern mirrorless equivalents
- Considered the pinnacle of Canon's DSLR technology
Cons
- Autofocus system is significantly less advanced than modern mirrorless eye-tracking
- Video performance is surpassed by newer, more affordable mirrorless bodies like the EOS RP
- Heavier and bulkier than modern mirrorless alternatives
- Incremental improvement over the 5D Mark III rather than a revolutionary leap
Caveats
- As a legacy DSLR, official repair support will eventually be phased out
- Individual reports of hardware failure, such as tethering ports breaking over time
- The industry-wide move to mirrorless means no new native EF lenses are being developed
Best for
- Portrait and wedding photographers who prefer the DSLR experience
- Photography students looking for a professional-grade body at a lower price point
- Users with an existing investment in EF-mount glass
Avoid if
- You require the latest AI-driven autofocus for fast-moving subjects
- Video is your primary medium
- You want a lightweight, compact camera for travel

5Ds is a better camera, better file, though today I'd opt for a 5Div.
It’s probably the greatest professional 35mm DSLR to ever be produced, and since the world has gone mirrorless, it will likely hold that title forever.
Mark iv is a great camera but everything has gone mirrorless now. It doesn’t diminish the value of the Mark iv or its ability to get work done
This is a legend of a camera.
I bought mine in 2015 and used it a *lot* until my 5D Mark IV all but replaced it in late 2019.
For $400 it is a slam dunk. I really can't get them for that cheap hear, neither the R7. Extremely cheap actually as most go for well over $1000.
Also i do have a 70-200 f4 is and a 5D4 (effectively a R), and while it is a better lens, i don’t really know if you make up that much difference for a crop body.
I have my trusted 5D Mark IV, I love her so much, but she can't tether anymore.
The R is pretty much a mirrorless 5D Mark IV
5D III or IV, a 6D. Really any camera can do this.
