Budget Rent a Car
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Budget Rent a Car is frequently criticized on Reddit for aggressive post-rental fees and poor customer service. While it offers the convenience of a major international brand, users report significant issues with 'phantom' smoking fees, billing discrepancies, and vehicles in subpar condition. Sentiment is heavily negative, with many users describing the brand as a 'scam' due to unexpected charges and difficult dispute processes.
Pros
- Wide international availability, including kiosks in remote locations like AlUla.
- Standardized insurance packages for international travelers.
- Competitive base rates for certain vehicle classes like SUVs.
Cons
- Frequent reports of 'phantom' cleaning or smoking fees based on questionable evidence like dust photos.
- Poor vehicle maintenance, including dirty interiors, unlisted damage, and mechanical issues like faulty headlights.
- Significant billing discrepancies where final rates are much higher than original reservations.
- Unresponsive customer support with long resolution times and boilerplate denials.
- High security deposits reported in some international locations.
Caveats
- Users strongly advise taking extensive 'before and after' photos of the vehicle's interior and exterior to combat potential fee disputes.
- International rentals may be significantly harder to refund or dispute through standard corporate channels.
- Corporate rates may offer some protection, but individual travelers often have to resort to credit card chargebacks.
Best for
- Travelers needing specific airport locations where other major brands are unavailable.
- Those with corporate accounts that provide an extra layer of protection against fees.
Avoid if
- You are sensitive to unexpected post-rental charges.
- You expect responsive customer service for issues encountered during the rental period.
- You are unable or unwilling to meticulously document the car's condition at pickup and drop-off.

Budget, Avis, Alamo. most recently from Buffalo, NY. and it's in the winter when they don't super clean the cars due to the freezing weather.
Don’t waste any more effort and time asking on Reddit and immediately contact Budget support before they ask you why you took so long.
I see a 2 day SUV rental going for about $360 with Budget.
After my experience with Budget in Italy, I will never use them again, anywhere. Sorry you got abused, too!
Took the short flight to AlUla and rented a car with Budget right at the airport. The rental counter is a tiny kiosk in the departures area, which can be easily missed. No IDP was needed, just my USA passport, drivers license and a credit card. They did take a ~$500 USD deposit which I thought was quite high.
The major international rental companies (Hertz, Avis, Budget, etc...) will ask you where you're from and will propose the right mandatory insurance package.
Budget, Avis, Dollar, Hertz, Sixt, Enterprise, Garenta, Turo... Just never had this problem, ever, and it's not something I need to go out of my way to avoid.
I tried to keep my cool with the original worker I spoke to at Budget, but I have no idea how to combat this. The rental, like I mentioned, was through my work, who does get corporate rates and does a lot of business with them, but I don’t know if it’s appropriate to bring that into it and mention I have informed them. I’m not anyone significant at the company either so I don’t want to make myself sound dumb, I just really don’t want to be on the hook for this ridiculous charge.
Back in October I rented a “premium” BMW from Budget in Portugal. We had just come off about 24 hours of travel with two young kids, got through the airport, and only once we got out to the parking garage did we actually see the car. Right away it was obvious something wasn’t right. The car was dirty, and there were a bunch of damage spots that weren’t on the sheet — easily 10+ areas. On top of that, one of the headlights wasn’t right. Driving at night later on it was noticeably worse visibility.
I contacted them during the rental about it — no response at all. After the trip I followed up again. Then it just turned into months of back and forth: • long gaps with no replies • eventually told it was escalated • told to wait 15 business days • that came and went with nothing. Now, over 4 months later, they finally respond and basically say: I knew about the condition and took the car, so no refund, and because it was an international rental they can’t do anything anyway.
