AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The AMD Ryzen 9 9900X3D is a 12-core processor that occupies a niche between pure gaming chips and high-end productivity CPUs. While it features 3D V-Cache, its internal 6+6 core chiplet architecture means only six cores have direct access to the extra cache, which can lead to gaming performance that is occasionally inferior to the 8-core 9800X3D or 7800X3D. It is generally praised for productivity and multitasking but criticized for the gaming compromises inherent in its asymmetric design.
Pros
- Strong performance in productivity workloads and C++ development
- Extra cores provide a benefit for background tasks like streaming while gaming
- Lower TDP and potentially better value than the 16-core 9950X3D in specific bundles
- Significant upgrade for users moving from older platforms like the 5900X
Cons
- Asymmetric design: only 6 of the 12 cores have access to the 3D V-Cache
- Gaming performance can be slightly worse than cheaper 8-core X3D models
- Core scheduling can lead to 'rough' performance in specific games
- Often considered a poor value for pure gaming compared to the 9800X3D
Caveats
- Effectively acts as a 6-core CPU in many gaming scenarios due to the chiplet layout
- Requires a specific use case (like UE5 development or heavy streaming) to justify the price over 8-core alternatives
- Performance gains over older chips are significant, but the 'lesson learned' for some users is that 8-core models are more consistent for gaming
Best for
- Users who split time between gaming and heavy productivity
- Streamers who need extra cores to handle encoding without impacting game stability
- C++ and Unreal Engine 5 developers
Avoid if
- Your primary focus is strictly gaming
- You want the most consistent frame rates without core-management overhead
- The 9800X3D or 7800X3D is available at a lower price
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~197 days) and comes from a period shortly after the product's release cycle; confidence is medium as hardware pricing and software optimization may have evolved.

X3D is incredibly valuable for your use case and is only getting better supported as time goes on. Why not get the 9900X3D (if it's cheaper by a large enough margin, I'm not sure based on the new or used market or by country etc). You get 12 cores instead of 16, but you have double the cache of the 9950X and more budget for elsewhere. You get a lower TDP too.
on a few games it looks pretty rough but over all not to big of a performance loss, most importantly better than what im currently using, $100 to learn a lesson.
If yes, go get their super bundle deal for the 9900x3d / 9950x3d cpu. There is no better deal.
CPU: Ryzen 9 9900X3D
Aswell i found a CPU on FB and its a r9 9900x3d going for 500e barely touched he just took it out of box and realised he messed up his motherboard, a brand new r9 9900x3d goes for 750e in my country,do you think they will go well together and are these good prices?
If OP needs the extra gaming juice, a 9900x3d should be more than good enough for only a little more than a 9800x3d.
I would return it and get a 7800X3D or 9800X3D. In some scenarios the 9900X3D actually performs slightly worse. Unless you have a very specific use case, it doesn't make sense.
A 9900X3D or 9850X3D could also be good options, especially if you're going to be working on a C++ UE5 project, but they're obviously more expensive. I'd suggest spending at least the extra $80 for the 9900X3D if you're going to be working on a C++ rather than Blueprint UE5 project.
Plus, if you're streaming, I guess you could benefit more from going with a 9900X3D (or 9950X3D) that, although it only has 6 cores with 3D cache, has 6 other cores to help with streaming.
The 9900X3D would be really tempting if it wasn't *sorta* bad in gaming.
