Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D is widely regarded by the Reddit community as the current peak of gaming CPU performance, frequently described as a higher-clocked refinement of the 9800X3D. While it offers exceptional frame rates in CPU-intensive titles like World of Warcraft, Tarkov, and CS2, its reputation is heavily tied to its price-to-performance ratio. It is highly recommended when found in retailer bundles (notably Microcenter) for a small premium, but many users advise against it as a standalone purchase if the price gap over the 9800X3D is substantial for only marginal (5-10%) gains.

Pros

  • Top-tier gaming performance, often cited as the fastest gaming CPU currently available.
  • Significant performance leaps in CPU-bound scenarios and simulation-heavy games.
  • Excellent value when purchased through Microcenter bundles which often include better motherboards for a minimal price increase.
  • Provides a smoother experience with fewer freezes in intensive titles like Rust and Cities: Skylines.

Cons

  • Diminishing returns on investment, with some users reporting only a 5-10% performance increase for a much higher cost.
  • Higher power consumption and heat generation compared to the 9800X3D.
  • Standalone pricing can be significantly higher (up to $220 more in some regions) than the 9800X3D.

Caveats

  • The value proposition is extremely volatile and depends entirely on current market pricing and bundle availability.
  • Performance gains are most noticeable at lower resolutions or in specific competitive titles; users at 4K may find themselves GPU-limited instead.
  • Some users suggest that the 'FOMO' (fear of missing out) factor drives sales more than the actual performance delta.

Best for

  • Competitive gamers aiming for ultra-high refresh rates (e.g., 600Hz).
  • Players of CPU-heavy MMOs and simulation games.
  • Builders who can take advantage of specific Microcenter bundles.

Avoid if

  • The price difference between this and the 9800X3D is greater than $50-$100.
  • You are building a budget-conscious rig where the extra cost could be better spent on a GPU upgrade.
  • You already own a 9800X3D, as the upgrade is considered marginal.

The reason I want to get the 9850x3D processor is this: I have a 600Hz monitor and I want to exceed 600 FPS in CS2.

I want to get the 9850X3D because it offers a +70 FPS difference in CS2, and that's a significant FPS difference for me.

9800x3d ( I'm not sure. Would the 9850x3d be better? But it's $120 more expensive.)

The best amd cpus rn for gaming are the ryzen 7 7800x3d, 9800x3d, and 9850x3d but all of them are within a few frames of each other in most games at 1440p so just pick up which ever you can find at a decent price.

So, if you're going to get the more expensive CPU, you might as well spend the $50 to get the *even better* one *with* the slightly better motherboard.
