AMD Ryzen 7 9700X
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The AMD Ryzen 7 9700X is positioned as a versatile 8-core processor that balances productivity and gaming. While it is praised for its snappy performance in production workloads like video editing and its efficient power consumption, it faces stiff competition from AMD's own X3D lineup. Reddit users generally view it as a solid 'all-rounder' for those who need workstation capabilities, though pure gamers are often steered toward chips with 3D V-Cache for better frame rates.
Pros
- Strong performance in production and multi-core workstation tasks
- Runs cooler and more efficiently (65-88W) compared to some high-end alternatives
- Excellent for general use, including a mix of gaming and content creation
- Frequently available in high-value retail bundles (e.g., Micro Center)
Cons
- Lacks the gaming-specific performance boost found in X3D series processors
- Value proposition is often questioned when priced similarly to the 7800X3D
- May require a future upgrade for users seeking the absolute highest frame rates in gaming
Caveats
- Gaming performance is 'more than enough' for 60–144 FPS, but it is not the top-tier choice for competitive high-refresh gaming
- The AM5 platform offers a good upgrade path, but users often debate skipping this generation for X3D variants
Best for
- Mixed-use builds involving video editing and productivity
- Users looking for a cooler-running, efficient 8-core CPU
- Builders utilizing Micro Center bundles to stay within a specific budget
Avoid if
- Your primary and near-exclusive focus is high-end gaming performance
- The 7800X3D or 9800X3D are available at a similar price point
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~200 days), which may impact the relevance of price-to-performance comparisons in the fast-changing CPU market.

you can go for a 9700x and 9060xt 16 gigs for around 1500€.
I use a Ryzen 7 9700X and it works great for me. It keeps up with my occasional gaming, and it’s very snappy for production use.
If your budget is limited and you mostly play shooters, classic single-player games, or chill 4K story games, and you’re aiming for 60–144 FPS, the 9700X is more than enough and you won’t miss much performance.
Probably a 9700x or a 7800x3d, those seem to be the ones with Micro Center bundles in my price range
Overall this is good. AM5 has long-term CPU upgrade headroom and the RX 9070 should handle 1440p comfortably for 3-4 years at least.
If you're more focused on editing I'd go with at least a 9700x or better and a Nvidia equivalent like a 4070
With all that other stuff you are doing you might want more cores with a 9700x (65-88w) or even a 7800x3d or 9800x3d (120w). But a cheap 9600x is fine for 90% of people.
Ryzen 9700x.
If no: 7800x3d, 7600x3d, 7500x3d, 9700x, 9600x, in that order.
