Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

AMD drivers are currently viewed with polarized opinions on Reddit, though the general sentiment has shifted toward them being more stable than in previous years. While many users report that they are now competitive with or even more stable than recent Nvidia releases, a significant minority still experiences 'driver timeouts,' crashes, and corruption issues that require manual intervention.

Pros

  • Significantly improved stability compared to older generations
  • Option to install drivers standalone without the Adrenalin software suite
  • Chipset drivers are frequently cited as effective for resolving system-level performance issues
  • Often perceived as having fewer issues than recent competitor driver cycles

Cons

  • Persistent reports of 'driver timeouts' and system crashes for some users
  • Drivers can become corrupted, occasionally leading to boot failures
  • Windows Update may automatically overwrite stable versions with inferior catalog drivers

Caveats

  • Using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is highly recommended by the community when switching to or troubleshooting AMD drivers
  • Some users find that specific older driver versions perform better for certain hardware, such as the 7000 series
  • Not always a 'set it and forget it' experience; may require manual tuning or clean reinstalls

Best for

  • Users comfortable with manual troubleshooting like using DDU
  • Builders looking for high price-to-performance value
  • Users who prefer minimal software overhead via driver-only installations

Avoid if

  • You require a strictly 'set it and forget it' software experience
  • You have a low tolerance for troubleshooting 'driver timeout' errors

Funny, AMD seems to have more stable drivers this generation, NVidia had issues and still has them occasionally.

It can be an issue with AMD drivers, especially in the past year or so, its been horrible so I switched to nvidia and use amd only in my linux server. Everyone keeps recommending AMD for its price2performance value but no one talks about all the headaches, bad drivers in the past year or so.

AMD does not require learning adreniline, you can install drivers without adreniline straight from AMD's website.

I’ve installed the AMD chipset drivers, my Nvidia drivers are all up to date, I haven’t changed any graphical settings. I’m so lost, I was expecting an upgrade but all I’ve received is worse frame rates.

Unless its been showing signs of dying, I'd sooner believe Windows Update installed one of the notoriously bad catalog AMD drivers.

AMD drivers aren't the best as some people are still complaining that the current drivers are still causing crashes.
