Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

All Nippon Airways (ANA) is highly regarded as a premium full-service carrier, frequently preferred over major US airlines for its superior service quality and economy class experience. While standard fares are often described as expensive, the airline is noted for frequent monthly sales that offer significant value, sometimes including free domestic legs within Japan. However, the brand is also associated with strict administrative policies and notoriously difficult award seat availability, particularly for business class redemptions through Star Alliance partners.

Pros

  • High service standards, often preferred over carriers like United
  • Allows booking for up to nine people in a single transaction
  • Frequent monthly sales can lead to highly competitive promotional fares
  • Highly rated economy class experience
  • Promotional fares sometimes include free domestic connections within Japan

Cons

  • Standard fares are often expensive compared to budget or mid-tier carriers
  • Business class award availability is extremely limited and difficult to secure with miles
  • Strict customer service policies regarding name changes and booking modifications
  • Award seats for Star Alliance partners may only be released ~15 days before departure

Caveats

  • Redemption can be elusive in regions (like India) that lack direct credit card transfer partners
  • Significant price gap exists between non-refundable promotional tickets and flexible refundable options
  • Business class award searches across partners like United or Aeroplan often yield no results

Best for

  • Travelers seeking a high-quality full-service experience to Japan
  • Large families or groups (up to 9) booking together
  • Budget-conscious travelers who can wait for monthly sales cycles

Avoid if

  • You are primarily looking to book business class seats using partner miles
  • You require flexible name-change or booking correction policies
  • You are traveling on a tight budget outside of promotional windows

I flew with ANA, and the flight was with a De Havilland Dash 8 (turboprop) which was an experience in itself! The staff was lovely

If cost is not a major concern, then book with full-service carriers like Vietnam Airlines, Thai Airways, JAL, ANA.

I'd rather fly ANA than United, so that's no concern.

Take as direct as possible, JAL and ANA are good, I would stick to that if possible.

ANA flies to both Beijing and Shanghai from KIX, so that is an alternative.

I think both JAL and ANA would be good. But not the best of value as you will get for Business. Both will cost you 17.5 to 20k miles I think approx. taxes would be similar for both.
