16GB DDR4 RAM
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
16GB of DDR4 RAM is currently regarded as the baseline for functional PC builds, frequently recommended for budget-conscious users or those sourcing parts from the used market. While many users find it sufficient for general tasks and older games, there is a growing consensus that it is reaching its limits. Performance issues like stuttering are reported in demanding titles when background applications are active, leading some to suggest it may no longer be enough for long-term future-proofing.
Pros
- Widely available and affordable on the used market (eBay, Marketplace).
- Considered 'just fine' as a minimum starting point for modern systems.
- Cost-effective way to maintain older platforms without a full DDR5 upgrade.
Cons
- Can cause stuttering in demanding games (e.g., Cyberpunk 2077) as usage nears 14GB.
- Increasingly pressured by background apps like Chrome and Discord alongside Windows updates.
- Single-stick configurations (1x16GB) can significantly bottleneck system performance compared to dual-channel.
- Some users report stability issues or boot failures when attempting to run XMP profiles.
Caveats
- Reported prices vary significantly, ranging from £40 used to over $100 for new kits.
- 16GB is now viewed as the absolute minimum; users are advised not to go any lower for a gaming build.
Best for
- Budget-constrained builds.
- Users comfortable buying used hardware to save money.
- General productivity and less demanding gaming.
Avoid if
- You plan on heavy multitasking while gaming.
- You want to future-proof your system for the next several years.
- You are building a high-end workstation or enthusiast gaming rig.

I've been building my first computer over the past few days (ryzen 5600, MSI b550 a pro, 16gb ddr4 ram, EVGA 600w, rtx 3050) I turned it on to make sure everything worked before putting it in the case, and it did work, I booted, downloaded windows etc. today I put it all into the case thinking all was fine. I connected the 20+4 pin power, the 4+ CPU, the power sw into the jfp1 port, pressed the button and... Nothing. Nothing happened.
