Pros

  • Yoyo costs $9 per month. If you do one class daily, that is 30 cents per class. ... When I took the Yoyo course, I did one class each day.
  • I had a very positive experience with Yoyo Chinese videos teaching pinyin. ... Being able to remember it after so many years without practicing indicates that it is a good beginner resource.
  • So far I like yoyo chinese.
  • Works through the courses in a structured way, the videos are short and snappy, allowing you to move through the material at a good pace without getting bogged down. Links to additional resources.
  • I’ve been studying Chinese on my own using YoYo Chinese, and I’ve really liked it so far. The only downside is the paywall.

Cons

  • I've asked ChatGPT about it and it recommended stuff like Yoyo Chinese, Duolingo, Pleco, and Italki.

If you're willing to take a self-paced online course, I 100% recommend Yoyo Chinese. I've taken all three of their conversational courses, and it got me to a very conversational level.

There are plenty of free Mandarin teaching videos on YouTube, such as “ChinesePod” and “Yoyo Chinese.” These are great for beginners to systematically learn pronunciation, basic conversation, and Chinese characters.

Yoyo Chinese — has online courses for beginner through upper intermediate levels, with a focus on conversational Chinese. Plus there are two character reading courses.
