Pros

  • A couple weeks ago, I started using Xiaohongshu out of curiosity (I never used TikTok). I've had a wonderful experience and have actually made a few friends!
  • Download TikTok, Xiaohongshu, or HelloChinese. There’s audio chatrooms where people hang out and shoot the shit, good for practice.
  • On Xiaohongshu, I really like watching study vlog videos of people learning languages, like English or Japanese or Korean.
  • Xiaohongshu, sounds like little yam (小红书→ 小红薯)
  • I joined Xiaohongshu today and wanted to post my art, so I decided to write out a bit of the description in the Mandarin I know so I don't just look like all the "tiktok refugees" joining the app

Cons

  • Because of the tiktok ban I recently downloaded xiaohongshu and would like to learn how to read and write Chinese.
  • Even on Xiaohongshu, one of the most international apps, there are many disgusting and vile racists.
  • If you prefer a challenge, you can find a video on Douyin or Xiaohongshu related to the topic you are studying.

I just did an experiment to use Xiaohongshu in English with auto-translation turned on. Translation to English seems to work fine with search, posts, comments, and most of the text in tables/diagrams. ... it just contains so much of the native discussion online these days.
