Wyrmspan
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Wyrmspan is generally regarded as a more complex and strategic evolution of the popular board game Wingspan. While it maintains the core engine-building loop, it introduces new mechanics like the Dragon Guild board and a consistent action economy using coins, which many players feel rewards clever play and reduces reliance on luck. However, it remains a low-interaction experience, often described as 'multiplayer solitaire,' and some players find the fantasy theme less engaging than the real-world educational facts of its predecessor.
Pros
- More strategic depth and 'crunchier' gameplay compared to Wingspan
- Consistent action economy (coins) provides more flexibility throughout the game
- The Dragon Guild board adds a rewarding secondary layer of progression
- Reduced RNG makes the game feel more deterministic and skill-based
- Engine-building feels more impactful and rewarding for long-term planning
Cons
- Very low player interaction, leading to a 'solitaire' feel
- Educational facts are moved to a separate book rather than being on the cards
- Removal of private objective cards and certain 'pink' power triggers found in Wingspan
- Early-game luck with cave cards can occasionally determine the winner prematurely
- Fantasy theme may feel less grounded or distinct compared to the original bird theme
Caveats
- Significantly 'heavier' than Wingspan, which may not suit casual players
- Resource scarcity is more pronounced, requiring much tighter management
- Does not fix the 'solitaire' criticism often leveled at this style of engine-builder
Best for
- Fans of Wingspan looking for a more complex and 'gamier' version
- Players who prefer fantasy themes and dragons over real-world nature
- Engine-building enthusiasts who enjoy optimizing tight resource chains
Avoid if
- You prioritize high player interaction and direct competition
- You enjoy the integrated educational aspect of the original Wingspan cards
- You prefer shorter, simpler games with less mental overhead

Wyrmspan (Dragon Game) has got good mechanics, but the thing I love about Bird Game is that the birds are real. To me Wyrmspan is just another fake dragon cards that all look the same to me.
I'd have to say Wyrmspan is my favorite of the bunch, I feel like they took the best parts of Wingspan and omitted the worst parts, adding the cave cards for additional boosts to keep you going and limiting the value of eggs made it have more strategy.
Wyrmspan was an instant hit in my household, along with Wingspan and now Finspan.
Wyrmspan is very fun!
We played our first game last night and after the initial new game learning curve it was really fun!
+1 Wyrmspan. I really enjoy the core loop of that game!
my fav board games from my collection so far are Wyrmspan and Oceans!
With Wyrmspan, I have the same number of actions (coins) every round and I can even finagle that to get extra actions and that just feels better.
I was personally surprised at how much I preferred Wyrmspan over Wingspan. Several little changes took away or lightened my frustrations with Wingspan.
Wyrm is the heaviest of the 3 with more actions, another shared player board (guild board) and requires a little more forethought with what cards you have. It has the most in terms of engine to me, but the card powers themselves are much more direct. But it makes up for less complicated cards by having more going on around the board. The dragon theme isn't my favorite. I got it as a gift but still very much enjoy the gameplay.
