Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Disco Elysium is widely regarded as a landmark narrative RPG, praised for its exceptional writing, deep internal monologue system, and a unique approach to failure where missing a skill check often opens new, darkly humorous story paths. While it is celebrated for its philosophical depth and 'Lynchian' atmosphere, it is highly polarizing due to its lack of traditional combat and extreme reliance on text, leading some to describe it more as an interactive book or visual novel than a conventional game.

Pros

  • Exceptional writing and voice acting that creates an immersive, mysterious world.
  • Innovative internal dialogue and skill check system that reflects the protagonist's psyche.
  • Strong 'fail forward' mechanics where mistakes often lead to interesting narrative outcomes.
  • Unrivaled role-playing depth that allows for highly personal character builds.
  • Genuinely funny and thought-provoking 'wacky' choices and dialogue options.

Cons

  • Extremely text-heavy gameplay that can feel tedious to those seeking action.
  • The conclusion to the central mystery is viewed by some players as weak or unsatisfying.
  • Occasional 'roadblocks' where failing specific skill checks can gate content despite the fail-forward design.
  • The tone can feel overly 'edgy' or 'wanky' to certain audiences.

Caveats

  • The game is almost entirely narrative-based; players expecting traditional RPG combat will be disappointed.
  • While failure is often interesting, some players feel the game occasionally 'shits on' their freedom by gating specific side content behind singular rolls.
  • The experience is highly dependent on the player's mood for heavy reading.

Best for

  • Fans of narrative-driven CRPGs and visual novels.
  • Players who enjoy philosophical, surreal, or politically charged storytelling.
  • Those who appreciate games where character failure is as interesting as success.

Avoid if

  • You prefer action-oriented gameplay or traditional combat systems.
  • You dislike reading large volumes of text in games.
  • You want a traditional 'power fantasy' where you can easily succeed at every task.

An edgy fever dream is a good way to describe Disco Elysium, although that's also the reason I don't really feel compelled to revisit it. I enjoyed it but it erred on the side of being a bit too wanky at times. I didn't feel like I was solving a mystery, so much as watch it open up in front of me.

The most insane and thought-provoking and genuinely funny (internal) dialogue and skill check system. ... The writing and voice acting are excellent which makes it easy to get drawn into the world and all its mysteries. ... I found the actual conclusion to the case and the game extremely weak though, that soured my overall experience.

You can make some interesting and wacky choices in the murder investigation, but the problem I have with RPGs like this is that there are always things I want to do, that I have the tools and the opportunity and the reason for, that are not given as an option. ... I found the actual conclusion to the case and the game extremely weak though, that soured my overall experience.

The most insane and thought-provoking and genuinely funny (internal) dialogue and skill check system. ... Once I learned to let the game unravel itself and also once I embraced the wacky options every once in a while, Disco Elysium absolutely shines. The writing and voice acting are excellent which makes it easy to get drawn into the world and all its mysteries.

I love how the game uses failure states: that is to say, there is no failure really. Yes, the detective messes up big time. But it still manages to thread the story through those somehow, often with (darkly) amusing results.

Disco Elysium was a game i put off for a while (even after owning it), but it was one of my favorite games last year.

While i can read through Disco Elysium, i can consume VNs, or JRPGs, full of text and reading.

Disco Elysium was good, but felt almost like a book.

Disco Elysium uses a very similar dice roll mechanic to BG3/DND. The game is also fairly easy as it's almost entirely narrative based and even if you fail a roll the game doesn't punish you too much and usually gives you alternate ways to achieve the objective.
