AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Root is a highly acclaimed but polarizing asymmetrical war game known for its charming woodland aesthetic and deep strategic complexity. While many consider it a modern classic with "gold-standard" production, it is notorious for a high barrier to entry. The game requires significant dedication to learn and teach because every player controls a faction with entirely unique rules, making it difficult to get to the table with casual groups.

Pros

  • Deeply asymmetrical gameplay where every faction plays a different 'mini-game'
  • Exceptional art style and high production values
  • Highly rewarding strategic depth and 'mind games' once players are experienced
  • Strong digital adaptation that helps mitigate the difficulty of physical setup

Cons

  • Extremely difficult to teach; requires explaining different rules to every player
  • Hard to find a consistent group willing to overcome the steep learning curve
  • Theme can be misleading, masking a 'vicious war game' as a cute animal game
  • Game balance is fragile if players have mismatched skill levels or lack meta-knowledge

Caveats

  • Opinions on rulebook clarity are split between those who find it precise and those who find it unclear for specific interactions
  • The Clockwork expansions for solo or low-player counts received mixed feedback regarding their effectiveness
  • New players are susceptible to 'backseating' due to the complexity of faction interactions

Best for

  • Dedicated gaming groups willing to play the same title repeatedly
  • Players who enjoy high asymmetry and political 'table talk'
  • Fans of deep strategy who appreciate unique aesthetics

Avoid if

  • You primarily play with new or casual players who dislike long rules explanations
  • You are looking for a light, 'cute' experience based on the box art
  • You cannot guarantee a consistent group of 3-4 players to maintain the game's balance

Parent context: I am going to be honest, I *love* the idea of gameboard as a puzzleboard. I *genuinely* want that. Reply: I had a couple games like that, and it's AMAZINGLY better than folding boards!

I find it incredibly rare to be able to convince people to play a game of Root.

Root is practically a gold-standard rulebook for me.

I bought him Root and all the available expansions for his birthday. ... I love Root very much, but I will happily admit that all the rules about card suits and ruling a clearance in order to determine what actions you are allowed to take are a bit much.

I always think recommending root in lists like this though is tricky, people brand new to games might not realize what they are signing up for because of the theme

Parent context: Nice collection, I see u got root and an expansion for it too, how do u like the game? Reply: I like it well enough! I’ve enjoyed the few times it’s been able to get to the table, has always felt quite accessible. I appreciate that even though it’s asymmetrical, you can introduce new players to the game just by having them focus on what their faction does

Root is more a war game where everyone plays with different rules and fights the entire time (which can get very tense/discouraging)

Parent context: Everdell vs Root, which is better? Reply: I tend to prefer root over Everdell but purely because I don’t like worker placement games that much.

If you enjoy games like Dune Imperium, Root, and Time of Crisis, there is a good chance you'll like what we've come up with.

Root, Arnak, SETI, Cascadia out of your collection. Other favs of mine would be War of the Ring, Imperial Assault, Europa Universalis and Twilight Imperium.
