Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Voidwrought is generally viewed as a polished, atmospheric Metroidvania that draws heavy comparisons to Hollow Knight but with a focus on avoiding "artificial difficulty." While it is praised for its fantastic visual and sound design, player reception is tempered by criticisms of its early-game balance and occasionally clunky movement mechanics. Post-launch patches are frequently cited as having significantly improved the experience, though some players still find the game lacks innovation or provides insufficient motivation to finish.

Pros

  • Excellent graphics and sound effects that create a strong atmosphere.
  • Open-ended exploration with significant potential for sequence breaking.
  • Post-launch balance patches have addressed many initial gameplay complaints.
  • Challenging gameplay that avoids feeling like "work" or being unfairly difficult.

Cons

  • Early-game combat feels weak and "pathetic" until the first weapon upgrade is obtained.
  • Movement mechanics, particularly the jump and ledge-grabbing, are described as mediocre or poorly designed.
  • Navigation can become frustrating; players report map markers disappearing and needing guides to find the path forward.
  • Relatively short experience, with some players finishing in under 9 hours.

Caveats

  • The story is often described as convoluted and may not provide enough narrative hook for some players.
  • NPCs may fail to account for situations where quests are completed before they are officially assigned.
  • Some players feel the game is well-made but lacks "new" or "interesting" ideas to distinguish it from other genre staples.

Best for

  • Fans of Hollow Knight looking for a similar aesthetic with more accessible difficulty.
  • Players who enjoy non-linear exploration and finding unintended paths.

Avoid if

  • You are looking for a long, 20+ hour Metroidvania experience.
  • You are easily frustrated by vague navigation or mashing walls to find secrets.
  • You prioritize innovative or experimental gameplay mechanics over genre-standard polish.

Am tempted to bounce back to Voidwrought though - it was fun tough not 'this feels like work' tough.

Parent context: Was loving Voidwrought but found the story convoluted. The arrow on the map disappeared after I defeated a couple of bosses and I resorted to mashing random walls. Needed a guide to work out where to go and there were no signs at all to go that way. Just felt like you need to constantly go in circles until you find a lucky break. Reply: I ended up accidentally sequence breaking to proceed by getting slither early

This game is best described as an attempt to make Hollow Knight without any artificial difficulty. It is beautiful and has excellent sound effects. ... Another issue that keeps the reception mixed is the mediocre jump that takes time to get used to and attacks being incredibly weak and pathetic before you get your first attack upgrade.

I played Voidwrought after the balance patches and agree with everything you wrote. Very solid game, and one more proof that you should never rely on Steam reviews alone.

This game is so good. My only complaint is that you felt weak until the first weapon upgrade but then it was fine. Definitely worth playing..

The pre-release demo also showcased a fair amount of issues. The ledge grabs were really atrocious, it did the bounce around when you move the character thing and didn’t stay centered, and several other things that distracted from the overall enjoyment of it.
