Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Ventoy is a popular open-source tool used to create multi-boot USB drives by allowing users to simply copy ISO, WIM, IMG, or EFI files onto the device without re-flashing. It is highly regarded for its ability to host multiple operating systems on a single drive while maintaining the USB's utility for regular file storage.

Pros

  • Enables booting multiple ISOs from a single USB stick
  • Eliminates the need to re-flash the drive for every new image
  • Allows the USB drive to be used for regular storage alongside bootable images
  • Supports additional configuration files like autounattend.xml for Windows installs
  • Simplifies the process of testing various Linux distributions

Cons

  • Can fail with Windows ISOs due to its virtual mapping system
  • Occasional 'missing driver' errors during OS installation
  • Described by some users as 'hit or miss' depending on the hardware or ISO

Caveats

  • The virtual mapping system may cause the Windows kernel to lose connection to the ISO during setup
  • Reliability can vary; some users report success where others encounter errors

Best for

  • Distro hopping and testing multiple Linux environments
  • Creating a universal IT toolkit with various OS installers and drivers
  • Users who want to avoid repeated USB flashing

Avoid if

  • You need a 100% reliable method for Windows installation and want to avoid virtual mapping issues
  • You prefer traditional single-image flashing tools like Rufus or balenaEtcher for simplicity

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~296 days), which may affect relevance for the latest software updates and compatibility fixes.

Used Ventoy for Pop! and followed Youtube/Microsoft directions to make the Win10 disk, made sure the drives were GPT and FAt32 and everything, booting in UEFI

While Ventoy is great, it often fails with Windows ISOs because it uses a virtual mapping system. During installation, the Windows kernel "loses" the connection to the virtual ISO, leading to that "missing driver" error.

Yeah probably not the best idea, Ventoy is hit or miss I find.

while ventoy creates a small boot portion where you boot into ventoy and can from there boot into an img or iso stored on the drive and can use the drive storage for other things than bootable images too like drivers or software installers or settings files or backups or an autounattend xml file for installing windows a certain way or whatnot

Some reason you can't just load a live iso to a USB drive (or a lot of them using Ventoy) and test without ever booting the internal drive?

Try all the distros that you want with Ventoy (Google it). Ventoy is easy for installation as well as trying/previewing distros without installing or changing the PC in any way.

You could test drive some distro by installing Ventoy on a USB stick and checking if your hardware works.

Put both on a Ventoy stick, try them in Live boot and use what you like better.
