Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Ugoos AM6B+ is considered a niche, enthusiast-grade media player valued almost exclusively for its ability to provide full Dolby Vision Profile 7 (FEL) support and lossless audio passthrough. While it is praised for stutter-free playback of high-bitrate 4K remuxes, it is widely described as a high-effort device that requires custom firmware (CoreELEC) and technical tinkering to function correctly. It is frequently used as a secondary device alongside an Apple TV or Nvidia Shield because it lacks the polish and app support of mainstream streaming platforms.

Pros

  • Full Dolby Vision Profile 7 (FEL) playback support when running CoreELEC
  • Lossless audio passthrough for formats like TrueHD and Atmos
  • Smooth handling of high-bitrate 4K Blu-ray remuxes without stuttering
  • Effective tone mapping for HDR10 and DV content on projectors
  • Strong hardware specs that handle high-bandwidth local network playback

Cons

  • Requires a complex setup involving CoreELEC/CPM builds to reach full potential
  • Poor quality stock remote and buggy HDMI CEC performance
  • Unpolished and 'ugly' user interface compared to mainstream OS options
  • Lacks support for standard commercial streaming apps (Netflix, etc.)
  • Requires significant technical knowledge and forum-digging for plugins and skins

Caveats

  • The device is essentially a dedicated local media player and is not a replacement for a general-purpose streaming box
  • Full functionality is dependent on specific community-developed software builds
  • Users often report it is 'annoying to set up' and may not be user-friendly for non-enthusiasts

Best for

  • Home theater enthusiasts with large local 4K Blu-ray rip libraries
  • Users specifically seeking Dolby Vision Profile 7 (FEL) support
  • Projector owners looking for better HDR tone mapping

Avoid if

  • You want a simple plug-and-play experience
  • You primarily watch content via streaming services like Netflix or Disney+
  • You are uncomfortable flashing custom firmware or troubleshooting technical issues

Foe ripped content I use Ugoos AM6B+ that tonemaps HDR10 and DV to lower max. brightness which makes the content brighter on a projector.

I love my Ugoos. CoreELEC is such a fabulous system! I thought FEL playback (CPM builds, etc) were available in 3 or 4 devices... but the AM6B+ is usually a/the top recommendation.

If your looking for dolby vision profile 7 FEL there is only 1 option (outside of physical blueray): The ugoos am6b+ box is the only one that supports it and it needs to run corelelec (kodi).

I’m told that if you want DV FEL support then you will need the Ugoos am6b+ running CPM coreELEC build.

If you’re a Plex user and you need Atmos pass through, that’s the one thing it can’t do, so I have the Ugoos AM6B+ for Plex and the ATV for everything else

I ended up pulling the trigger on the Ugoos AM6B+ to pair with my LG CX. I’m chasing that proper FEL Dolby Vision playback and I think this combo is going to hit the sweet spot for my setup.

The reason I ask is that people jump through a lot of hoops to set up the Ugoos am6b+ for that stuff, but for most people I’d say it’s not necessarily worth the effort unless you’re an absolute enthusiast. If you want FEL support then get the Ugoos. But be prepared to be locked into Kodi, with a device that has a shit remote, buggy HDMI CEC, and be endlessly digging through forums to set up plugins and skins.

Get a UGoos + CoreElec CPM build to get DV FEL 7 and get an Apple TV 4K to do streaming part.

For the selling price the Ugoos is a no-brainer.
