Tsukiji
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Tsukiji is widely regarded by Reddit users as a crowded tourist destination that has lost much of its original appeal since the wholesale fish market moved to Toyosu. While it remains a popular spot for street food and early-morning meals, many travelers now consider it an overpriced "tourist trap" where similar quality food can be found elsewhere in Tokyo for less money and with fewer crowds.
Pros
- Good for early morning dining as stalls open around 7 AM
- Vibrant street food atmosphere and "vibes"
- Specific popular snacks like fresh tamagoyaki and matcha lattes
- Convenient for jetlagged travelers needing an early breakfast
Cons
- Extremely overcrowded with tourists
- Higher prices compared to other Tokyo neighborhoods
- The actual wholesale fish market and tuna auctions have moved to Toyosu
- Often described as a "tourist trap" with food that can be found elsewhere for cheaper
Caveats
- The famous "inner market" no longer exists at this location; only the outer retail market remains.
- Sentiment is notably negative among users who value authenticity or budget-friendly dining.
Best for
- First-time visitors who want a street food market experience
- Early risers looking for breakfast before other shops open
- Travelers who don't mind dense crowds for the sake of the atmosphere
Avoid if
- You are looking for the actual wholesale fish auction (visit Toyosu instead)
- You want to avoid highly commercialized tourist spots
- You are seeking the best value-for-money sushi in Tokyo

Tsujiki is really just tourists now as the actual market moved to Toyosu.
Tsukiji is a waste of time. You can get the same food anywhere else, probably for cheaper and without the crowds.
I'd also put Tsukiji in that boat too.
I like Tsukiji but it's pretty over-crowded and touristy.
We were mentally prepared that Tsukiji would be crowded with foreigners like ourselves, so it wasn’t that bad. But, it was still way more crowded this time.
Tsukiji’s still fun for the street food vibes.
Drop tsukiji if you’re expecting the old fish market...it’s just shops now.
Skip Tsukiji, there's no reason to go.
Dont go to tsukiji market. Instead check out of your hotel and go straight to kyoto for nishki.
11/1- Same as with Kobe, you don't need Tsukiji. You can find that food everywhere without going out of your way and without the crowds of tourists.
