I bought some ThirdReality bulbs as they are cheaper than Hue, I'm just starting with my automation process... For now I think I can cheap out on bulbs until I want to take the next step.

now I'd at ThirdReality has rightfully taken over that spot. Good color quality, reliable zigbee bulbs.
And for those not wanting to overengineer things, ThirdReality has a zigbee-based solution that works off the shelf and is surprisingly affordable.
