Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Reddit sentiment toward tea tree oil is generally negative, with users frequently citing irritation and inconsistent results. While a minority of users find it effective for specific issues like skin flaking or bacterial/fungal acne that resists other treatments, many report it is less effective than clinical alternatives and carries significant risks of skin damage.

Pros

  • Can be effective for skin flaking issues
  • May clear up bacterial or fungal acne that does not respond to salicylic acid
  • Affordable options available (e.g., Trader Joe's)
  • Useful for some as a spot treatment for large bumps

Cons

  • Frequently reported as irritating or causing a burning sensation
  • Often described as less effective than clinical treatments like ketoconazole or benzoyl peroxide
  • Can cause skin peeling and redness
  • High potential for 'meh' or negligible results on stubborn acne

Caveats

  • Acts as a contact allergen and can cause contact dermatitis
  • Becomes unstable when exposed to UV light
  • Risk of severe burning or sun sensitivity if applied before sun exposure
  • Should be avoided if the skin is already irritated, as it can make inflammation worse

Best for

  • Users looking for an affordable, natural spot treatment
  • Addressing specific bacterial or fungal skin concerns

Avoid if

  • You have sensitive skin prone to irritation
  • You expect to be in direct sunlight shortly after application
  • You prefer clinically-proven, stable active ingredients

Put tea tree oil on 2x/day for a year and it was helping keep my skin clear and smooth. One day in the summer, I go out for a run in the middle of the day and forget sunscreen. Skin starts burning at end of run and I see my skin looks badly sunburnt when I get home. Had no idea it could be the tea tree oil, few days later I put it on again and noticed it burning, immediately washed it off. Skin starts peeling and I've never dealt with this, so I just thought I needed to wait for it to heal naturally, like a normal sunburn.

I can try leaving out the teatree and lemon grass but those two oils were stopping the flaking issue I had.

The tingling sensation you feel is likely caused by the tea tree oil. It's really not the best antibacterial or that great for acne and it can also be irritating.

Alternatively I've been using tea tree oil too. But it doesn't work as well as the ketoconazole.

I have been really impressed lately by how much tea tree oil can clean up bacterial and fungal action on the skin. Trader Joe’s has a nice one for like six dollars that clears up my acne that doesn’t respond to salicylic acid. May be worth a try.

Then, I let it heal and close off until bed, before applying tea tree oil and witch hazel and moisturising around it.

I’ve tried warm compress, ice, microdart patches, tea tree oil, sulfur spot treatment, BP, salicylic acid, blue light and high frequency wand.

I also started drinking spearmint tea (1-2 cups a day) and applying tea tree oil to any large bumps. I do think I’ve seen a difference, but it hasn’t halted the acne completely. It took about 3 months to feel like I was seeing a difference from the DIM (and maybe the tea?).
