TCL Q77K
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The TCL Q77K is an entry-level QLED TV positioned as a budget-friendly option for users who prioritize gaming features like a 144Hz refresh rate over premium picture quality. While it is praised for its high value-to-price ratio, it is frequently criticized for significant technical trade-offs, most notably a lack of local dimming and low peak brightness that hampers HDR performance.
Pros
- High refresh rate support (120Hz native, 144Hz via HDMI) at a very low price point.
- Excellent 'bang for buck' for basic streaming and casual gaming.
- Relatively wide viewing angles for an entry-level panel.
- Smooth operating system performance and stable user interface.
Cons
- Lack of local dimming leads to poor contrast and visible backlight noise in dark scenes.
- Low peak brightness (reported as low as 288-400 nits) makes it struggle in well-lit rooms.
- Poor upscaling and motion handling, particularly noticeable when watching sports.
- Underwhelming HDR performance, with some users reporting a hazy or 'off' look in Dolby Vision.
Caveats
- The 'QLED' implementation is described by some as a lower-tier version focusing primarily on green quantum dots.
- Many users recommend stepping up to the QM6K or QM6K Pro for a significant improvement in picture quality.
- Imperfections in the backlight are highly visible when the TV is used in a dark room.
Best for
- Budget-conscious gamers who need 144Hz support.
- Secondary rooms or casual streaming where high-end picture quality is not a priority.
- Users looking for a large screen size on a very strict budget.
Avoid if
- You primarily watch sports due to motion and upscaling limitations.
- You want a true HDR experience with high peak brightness.
- You frequently watch movies in dark environments where local dimming is necessary.

It's biggest weakness is lack of local dimming and ~400nits max brightness.
Q77K is 120Hz native with 144Hz via HDMI. It has no local dimming, though. That is the biggest upgrade
There is no local dimming and 500 nit peak brightness that makes it’s impossible to get impact from DV/HDR. It’s OK tv for gamers, but very basic TV itself
I've been using TV speakers and they kind of suck (TCL Q77K). I recently renovated my den area and the speakers are drowning in the open space.
I still bought 2 of them online anyway because the picture was good enough for the price ... In my house, not sitting next to a “better” TV, the picture looks great without even changing any of the default picture settings.
I have the q77k too and I like it.little dark on some of my games but overall happy with it.
I watch Spiderman NO Way Home on Q77K and LGC1 and it looked amazing on both tv's. Only slightly better on the C1. ... Q77 looks great.
I'm glad you like it but If you think movies look stunning on it when it's barely pushing out 250 nits IDK what to tell you. ... The real problem is that for some sizes it's not much cheaper than significantly better TV's like the QM5K and QM6K when it's on sale.
Have played multiple PS5 games, movies etc. on it and all look stunning. Currently playing Ghost of Yotei and it looks incredible. ... All look and run amazing. I also played Cyberpunk, Stellar Blade and Horizon on an LG C1 a few years ago and they looked very similar to the Q77K.
It is not a good tv. I bought the q77k first then returned it after playing with all the adjustments and just not being good.
