AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The TCL C805 (also known as the C755 or QM8B) is a mid-range Mini-LED TV frequently cited as a top value-for-money choice, particularly for gaming. While it is praised for its high brightness and gaming-centric features like HDMI 2.1 and 144Hz support, user experiences are mixed regarding software stability and motion handling. Some owners report excellent black levels and minimal blooming, while others highlight technical trade-offs such as fewer dimming zones and lower peak brightness compared to higher-end or newer models.

Pros

  • Excellent price-to-performance ratio for a Mini-LED display
  • Strong gaming suite including HDMI 2.1, 144Hz/120Hz support, VRR, and ALLM
  • High peak brightness compared to similarly priced competitors
  • Deep black levels reported on larger models (e.g., 75-inch)

Cons

  • Software issues including stutter and frame drops when using internal apps or casting
  • Fewer dimming zones and lower peak brightness than newer models like the Q9B or QM7
  • Reports of raised black levels in Dolby Vision game mode
  • Mediocre motion handling and occasional reports of grain or ghosting

Caveats

  • Sold under different names depending on region and retailer, including C755 and QM8B
  • Users recommend manually lowering black levels (to 45 or 46) to combat raised blacks in specific HDR modes
  • Firmware updates have been reported to occasionally introduce new bugs

Best for

  • Budget-conscious gamers needing HDMI 2.1 and VRR
  • Users looking for a bright Mini-LED experience without the premium price of flagship models

Avoid if

  • You are sensitive to motion stutter or software lag in smart TV interfaces
  • You require the highest possible dimming zone count for professional-grade contrast

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~575 days), which may affect relevance for current firmware or newer competing models.

Then there are some older TCL models like the C805, but they all have half the dimming zones and half the max brightness, let alone everything else.

I've played around a lot with my father's C805 and I like my Q70R better in almost all regards but brightness. Sure, the microcontrast is better, but it comes at a cost too - way worse native contrast and much more blooming with the higher brightness.

I have 75inch C805 and the blacks are so deep. No blooming to my untrained eye.

I just got myself a TCL c755 (also called the c805). I believe that is around 500 usd. Same size 55 inch. I would tell you to go to a store and look at this model. It's very good value for the price which is why I bought it.
