TCL C655
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The TCL C655 is a budget-oriented QLED TV that receives mixed to negative feedback, primarily due to significant quality control issues and underwhelming HDR performance. While users appreciate its affordability and snappy Google TV interface for SDR content, many report hardware defects like backlight bleed, vertical banding, and panel failures occurring shortly after one year of use.
Pros
- Affordable price point for a QLED display
- Snappy and responsive Google TV operating system
- Good performance for SDR content and YouTube viewing
- Supports Dolby Vision and 1440p at 120Hz for gaming
Cons
- Frequent reports of backlight bleed, clouding, and 'Dirty Screen Effect' (DSE)
- HDR and Dolby Vision content often appears washed out or lacks contrast
- Lacks a native 120Hz panel; uses 'DLG' software tricks that may limit resolution
- Poor long-term reliability with reports of vertical banding appearing after 13 months
Caveats
- The 120Hz feature is often achieved via Dual Line Gate (DLG) technology, which typically reduces vertical resolution.
- Quality control is described as a 'lottery,' with some users requiring multiple replacements for dust or panel defects.
- Local dimming zones are limited (around 100 or fewer), which affects dark scene performance.
Best for
- Budget-conscious buyers
- Casual SDR viewing and office work
- Users who prioritize a fast smart TV interface over high-end HDR
Avoid if
- You want a true native 4K@120Hz gaming experience
- You are sensitive to backlight bleed or panel uniformity issues
- You primarily watch high-dynamic-range (HDR) movies
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~578 days), and because hardware specifications and software updates change quickly, confidence is lower.

The same thing happened to me with my c655 from one moment to the next, it is 1 year and 1 month old
This is actually my third C655. The first one had dust inside the panel and they replaced it. The second one had disastrous backlight bleed and they replaced it as well, which is how I ended up with this one. It has some ugly clouding, which is why I use bias lighting, but aside from that it looked fine and now I have no idea what happened.
My C655, after one year and one month, suddenly developed vertical banding and DSE. ... Now it shows up in real content bright or dark and it looks terrible.
i recommended based on the budget, but C655 also looks good, today i checked for 55P8K.
Same here i have c655 after update everything seems so smooth but sound becomes downgrade
I think the same thing happened to me last year with a c655
It occurred to me that I can buy a 43” TCL C655 for a reasonable price. It will be used for browsing, office work and gaming.
Parent context: I'm having an issue with Resident Evil 4 Remake on the PS5. When HDR is turned on, I notice bluish smearing or blotches in dark areas of the game. It becomes especially noticeable in low-light scenes. Reply: Tcl c655
Rtings gave the non-pro (c655) quite a rough score
I have the c655 and the androidtv on it is pretty fast, close to a chromecast 4k. The image is very good once you change all the ugly energy saving settings it comes with by default.
