Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Sunscreen is regarded as a non-negotiable staple for skin health, aging prevention, and protection against severe burns. While the sentiment is broadly positive regarding its necessity, Reddit users emphasize that its effectiveness is highly dependent on proper application habits and strictly adhering to expiration dates.

Pros

  • Essential for preventing hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and long-term sun damage.
  • Critical protection for users on Accutane or retinoids whose skin is more susceptible to damage.
  • Protects high-risk areas often overlooked, such as the ears, neck, and hands.
  • Can provide a healthy 'glowy' appearance when used consistently.

Cons

  • Expired product is highly ineffective and has led to reports of second-degree burns.
  • Potential for skin sensitivity or breakouts, sometimes requiring users to stop use to clear their skin.
  • Application can be tedious, requiring clean hands and frequent reapplication.

Caveats

  • Expiration dates are critical; using old sunscreen to avoid 'sunk cost' often results in severe sunburns.
  • Reapplication is necessary every 90 minutes to 2 hours, especially when on the water or with children.
  • Travelers face frustration with airline liquid restrictions when trying to pack adequate amounts for trips.

Best for

  • Daily anti-aging skincare routines.
  • Outdoor activities like kayaking, beach trips, and hiking.
  • Managing and minimizing the appearance of scars.

Avoid if

  • The product is past its expiration month.
  • You have a known sensitivity to specific brand reformulations.

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is drawn from discussions in early 2026 with a median source age of approximately 183 days.

And definitely be diligent with your sunscreen so it doesn’t create hyperpigmentation.

unless you're wearing sunscreen even at 8 am in december on a rainy day and every single time you step foot outside you're still getting a significant amout of comulative UVA exposure.

You don't see people in their 30s walking around with major wrinkles because they haven't worn sunscreen just like you don't see people the same age looking 18 with insane collagen because of obsessive broad spectrum sun screen use.

Please keep up with covering it up and putting sunscreen on it. It should go away in a few days anyway.

I used an expired sunscreen (hourly!!) while kayaking like 15 years ago and got the worst sunburn I’ve ever had. Do not play around with it.

also, i’d maybe look for an spf or just layer a sunscreen over it since sun protection is the one thing a basic moisturizer can't really handle on its own.

Once a dermatologist told me the most important variable to good skin (and age resistance of the skin) is not sunscreen, not smoking/drinking, and definitely not cosmetics.

Emulsification is the most difficult and most importantly part of sunscreen formulation, because it has to be perfectly even to protect. That’s why people can’t make an effective sunscreen with just raw ingredients and a KitchenAid, and virtually all “indie” sunscreens fail testing. The active ingredients will clump and it will give patchy protection. But definitely don’t count on it.

keeping it moisturized is big and protected from the sun (sunscreen or covering), you don’t have keloid/ hypertrophic scars but scar massages with oil would be recommended, silicone scar tape is only medically proven way to minimize appearance of these scars without procedures, but if in the future you’re still unhappy with the look of them, CO2 lazering, skin resurfacing, and medical tattooing is the more invasive and medical grade recommendations
